For those who have a sect, it will change. The Madhyamikas refute me, but this sect that is established from the beginning does not exist, so it is impossible for it to be contradictory to one's own words. Because no matter from the aspect of refuting or not refuting, one would not consider saying refuting words. The Sutra says: Venerable Subhuti, does one obtain the unarisen attainment with the arisen dharma? Or does one obtain the unarisen attainment with the unarisen dharma? Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, I do not think that one obtains the unarisen attainment with the arisen dharma, nor do I think that one obtains the unarisen attainment with the unarisen dharma. Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, then do you not obtain anything and do not realize anything? Subhuti said: (310a) Venerable Shariputra, there is attainment, and there is realization, but not in the way of two. Venerable Shariputra, attainment and realization are spoken of in worldly terms, and Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva are also spoken of in worldly terms, but in the ultimate truth, there is neither attainment nor realization. Thus, it is widely said. For the arisen and unarisen dharmas, attainment and non-attainment are both negated in the two truths. Without examination, it appears as real, without examination, it only appears as pleasing, for this deceptive dharma that cannot be established by reason and the wisdom of the noble ones, which is merely a false appearance, it is said to be attainment in worldly terms, in accordance with this, no matter from the aspect of refuting or not refuting, the refutation is not established, even if it has not been examined, in worldly terms, it is necessary to rely on refutation to establish what is to be refuted and what can be refuted, just as an illusionist refutes an illusion, magic refutes magic, in a dream, speaking unreasonable words refutes, appearance refutes darkness, it is necessary to understand. Like this, for some people who have not understood the profound state of Madhyamika, just as they think, the false deceptive dharma produced by the power of karma and afflictions, like the two moons seen by blurred eyes, the form of the object of eye consciousness,

Things like pots are established by conventional valid cognition, and are true as they are established. Holding that to be true is not true clinging, but is the correct view of Madhyamaka. True clinging means clinging to something that is not true, that is established as real, that does not exist in the knowable, like a horn. That is what true clinging is, they say. Then, ordinary people who have not entered a philosophical system will realize the view of Madhyamaka, and it will be impossible for them to have innate true clinging. This is because ordinary people do not regard things like pots as being established by their own mode of abiding, as objects that do not exist in the knowable. Because they only cling to the appearance in their minds as being true and existent. Here it is said: If the self that is to be refuted by reason does not exist in the knowable, then because of that, the self appears there, and together with clinging to it, the conventional is not true. Therefore, the self that is to be refuted by reason does not exist even in the world. If you assert that, then all the people in the world will effortlessly realize the view of Madhyamaka, because the people in the world never think that the object to be refuted is anything other than a false convention, and never think that it is a true convention. Even for the world itself, although the false convention is not refuted by reason as being non-existent, how can the innate mind of the world regard the false convention as the conventional truth? The self that is to be refuted by reason is the conventional truth, and if it is done on the basis of being truly established, then therefore, the object to be refuted by reason and the path are both the same entity, and not different. The conventional truth that is to be refuted by reason is truly established. If it is not to be refuted, then therefore, the path is also not to be refuted. The conventional truth is not to be refuted by reason and valid cognition, because reason is to be established there. The truth of the path that arises from meditation, the conventional truth also becomes the object to be established. If you assert that, then the noble ones have never seen the conventional truth anywhere other than just the conventional, so it is said that it is impossible for the clinging to the conventional truth to arise, is it not contradictory to this? The conventional truth is established there, and clinging to it there, if it is to be refuted, then it becomes knowable. If not, then other than the conventional truth, the truth and clinging to it are to be refuted.
