Through the power of (the twelve links of dependent origination) existence, the stream of life is continuously maintained. The third aspect (of explaining the truly existent) is to show that all things exist by being dependently imputed. There are two types of explanations, differentiating between cause and effect. The first aspect is that if things are analyzed, they cannot be found, but are established merely by reputation. There are two types of all terms that do not contradict the two truths. The first is: pots, woolen cloth, reeds, armies, and forests, rows of trees, etc., houses, vehicles, dust, and guesthouses, etc., and similarly, whatever things arise through whatever means, these should be understood, because the Muni (Shakyamuni Buddha) does not argue with the world. Just as I and my aggregates are like a chariot, all things are compared to a chariot, that is, pots, woolen cloth, reeds, armies, and forests, rows of trees, and houses, vehicles, dust, and guesthouses, etc., all of these (307a) are like a chariot, and if analyzed by the seven aspects, they do not exist. Apart from that, they exist dependently on their own collection of parts, and are established as such. Similarly, whatever things are spoken of and named by beings, that is, travelers, through this mere reason, should be understood as being established by reputation without analysis. Because, the Muni said that he does not argue with the world. The world argues with me, but I do not argue with the world, therefore he explains without refuting the reputation and terms of the world. The second is: limbs, qualities, desire, nature, and firewood, etc., and the meanings of those who possess qualities, those who possess limbs, attachment, and the basis, fire, etc. These, like a chariot, do not exist when analyzed by the seven aspects. Contrary to the situation outside of analysis, they exist through the reputation of the world. How does the world name things? Limbs, qualities, desire, nature, and firewood, etc., and in sequence, combined with the meanings of those who possess limbs, those who possess qualities, attachment, and the basis, fire, etc., these, like a chariot, do not exist when analyzed by the seven aspects, that is, when searched for. Contrary to the situation outside of analysis, without analysis, these dharmas exist through the reputation of the world. For example, a pot.

It is that which possesses limbs, such as pottery, which are its limbs; a vase is that which possesses qualities, such as the color blue-green, which are its qualities; a vase is the basis, such as a bulging belly, a drooping mouth, and a long neck, which are its characteristics, and the same applies to woolen cloth and so on. Desire is a special attachment, arising from the mind (307b). Attachment is the basis of desire, that is, the mind or the person. Fire is that which burns. Wood is that which is to be burned. Therefore, by taking the limbs as the cause, it is called that which possesses limbs; relying on that which possesses limbs, it is called limbs, just like the example of a chariot. Relying on wood, there is fire, and relying on fire, there is wood. Similarly, objects and subjects, subjects and qualities, etc., all phenomena that are established by reliance are merely worldly conventions. Because they cannot withstand rational analysis, it should be understood that the two truths are not contradictory. Secondly, cause and effect are shown to be merely mutually dependent, refuting that cause and effect are substantial. First, two: the real and the unreasonable if not. First: If the cause produces the effect, then that which produces is the cause; if it does not produce the effect, then there is no effect, and it becomes without cause. If the effect has a cause, then it will be produced, therefore, limbs etc. are established by dependent designation, and similarly cause and effect are also established by dependent designation. Because if the cause produces the effect, then that which produces is the cause; if the cause does not produce the effect, then because there is no effect, the name of the cause becomes without cause. Because there is no reason to establish the cause as the cause, if everything is the cause, then everything becomes the cause. Therefore, whether it is the cause or not is determined by whether it can produce the effect or not. If the effect has a cause, then it can be produced; if it does not have a cause, then it cannot be produced, therefore cause and effect are established by reliance, and not by nature. Second: What transforms from what, what transforms from what before, please tell. If you think that it is established by its own nature, then which of the cause or effect is later, which of the cause or effect is established earlier, what is established from (308a) what?

Speak of that which, relying on what, will the previously relied upon be accomplished. Because it cannot be spoken, the establishment as cause and effect also arises like a chariot, through the means of a cause. But it is not through its own self-nature. Secondly, there are two: things and, abandoning sameness. First, refute by examining contact and non-contact. A cause without an establishing function is unreasonable. According to the Madhyamaka view, there are three non-contradictions. The first is: If your cause produces an effect by contact, then, because their powers are the same, the effect produced will have no difference. If they are separate, then this cause will have no difference from non-causes. Abandoning these two, there will be no other discriminations. Furthermore, if the effect is produced by its own nature, is it produced by contact or non-contact? If, like the first case, your cause produces an effect by contact, then, like the meeting of a river and an ocean, the powers of cause and effect will become one, so there will be no difference between this being the producing cause and that being the produced effect. In that case, the effect will not be produced by the cause. If it produces from cause and effect existing separately without contact, then just as the cause of barley does not produce the effect of wheat that is not in contact, it will not produce an effect, or all existence and non-existence of effects will be produced by all existence and non-existence of causes, because non-contact is the same. Therefore, if this cause has no difference from non-causes, that is also what you do not want. If there is a cause and effect established by its own nature, then abandoning these two, producing and being produced, contact and non-contact, there will be no other third discrimination, so a cause established by its own nature will definitely not produce an effect. The second is: If your cause does not produce an effect, then the name 'effect' does not exist, and a cause without an effect will become without a cause, and existence is also impossible. Therefore, if your cause does not produce an effect, then the name 'effect' does not exist (308b). A cause without an effect will become without a cause, because the designation of the name of cause is dependent on the effect. The establishment of a cause as a cause is also not possible without a cause, therefore cause and effect.
