Whatever arises among all of them, that is not it. If you think that is the self, then the object of grasping will become different. Apart from the object of grasping, what is your self? Thus it is said. It is also not something unconditioned that arises from what has not previously arisen. As it is stated in the treatise: It does not arise from what has not arisen, this would be a fault. The self would become something created, or arising would become without cause. Thus it is said. This self is also not birth and destruction, because the object of grasping is not the self, it is birth and destruction. How can the object of grasping become the grasper? Thus it is said. In this, there are also not the four possibilities of permanence and impermanence, etc. As the verse says: Permanence and impermanence, etc., where are they in peace? End and endlessness, etc., where are they in peace? Whoever clings to the Tathagata as existing, being held by dense clinging, that one will conceptually think of Nirvana as non-existent. For that which is empty by nature, after the Buddha's Nirvana, to think of it as existing or not existing is not reasonable. Thus it is said. That self is neither the same as the aggregates nor different from them. If the aggregates were the self, it would have birth and destruction. If it were different from the aggregates, it would not have the characteristics of the aggregates. Thus it is said. The qualities of stability and instability, etc., which are indicated by words, arise if they exist in the object that possesses the qualities, and they do not arise if they do not exist in the object. Therefore, the self itself is non-existent. As it is stated in the sutra: The four inexhaustible dharmas, taught by the protector of the world, are sentient beings, space, bodhicitta, and likewise the Buddha and all dharmas. If these were substantially existent, they would be completely exhausted. Because they are non-existent, they are not exhausted, therefore it is said that they are inexhaustible. Thus it is said (306a). Thirdly, the self and what belongs to the self are imputed without investigation, merely due to ignorance. There are two ways to be liberated by realizing that these two do not exist. The first is: Because beings always have the thought of grasping at self, and they have the thought of 'mine' towards whatever belongs to it, therefore that self is produced from ignorance in conventional terms, without investigation. Even if searched for with the sevenfold analysis, it cannot be found, but due to ignorance, the self arises, causing one to wander in samsara. What is that self?

The heterodox cling to something other than the aggregates, while our own school holds that the aggregates themselves are the self, or that the self and the aggregates are inexpressible. Those who understand how the Blessed One taught know that the term 'self' is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates, and that it has no inherent existence. This is simply a designation. Because such a self is always the object of clinging for beings such as humans and animals who are endowed with ignorance, and for whom the thought of self-grasping arises strongly. And the basis for the dominion or imputation of that self, whether it be internal sources such as the eye, or external objects of enjoyment such as forms, is where the thought 'this is mine' arises. That self arises from the power of delusion without investigation, and is not established by its own nature. Secondly, because there is no action without an agent, therefore my 'mine' does not exist in the absence of a self. Therefore, contemplate the emptiness of self and what belongs to self, and that yogi will be liberated. Even though there is no self, it is still designated as 'self', and therefore the yogi does not apprehend, and the appropriation of the eye and so on does not arise. Because the yogi does not apprehend any object, he will be liberated from samsara. As it is said in the scriptures: 'When the thought of self and what belongs to self is exhausted in internal and external phenomena, appropriation will cease, and when that is exhausted, birth will be exhausted.' And as it says in the Ratnavali: 'The aggregates arise from self-grasping, self-grasping is false in reality, if the seed is false, how can the birth be true? Having seen that the aggregates are not true in this way, one will abandon self-grasping, having abandoned self-grasping, the aggregates will not arise later.' Like that. If there is no self, then is there also no 'mine'? Because just as a pot is impossible without a potter, there is no action without an agent, because the object of the agent's action is imputed as action. Therefore, 'mine' does not exist, because the self of the agent has ceased to exist. Therefore, contemplate the aggregates as empty of self and what belongs to self, and when samsara is not seen, that yogi will be liberated. If forms and so on are not apprehended, then thoughts of attachment and so on will not arise towards them, therefore the Hearers and Solitary Realizers will attain nirvana without appropriation. Although Bodhisattvas realize selflessness, their heart...
