Therefore. Furthermore, it is said that what is established based on the nature of phenomena is because all phenomena such as persons are the pacification of all elaborations and characteristics. However, it is because of not understanding and understanding in this way that they are established as Buddhas and sentient beings. The need is that although a person is not substantially existent, it is easy to apply terminology (302b), and to be in accordance with the world, and to avoid fear, and to state the merits and faults of oneself and others, so the teacher Son of the Victorious Ones said. The Ornament of the Sutras says: From the distinctions of the states of practice that are completely purified of all afflictions, the distinctions of entering and continuing are also closely shown by persons. So it is said. Establishing the pride of self on the essence and showing it with that sound is that if it is not examined, then that essence is used for the liberation of the great secret Vajrayana practitioners, so that the work for that is done continuously in the three bases, paths, and results, so the word of self is applied to that. It harms reality. Those bases of establishment are not the self as established in both truths, so if examined with reason, a person is not established, and especially if the essence itself is the self, as it is said: Possessing the sound of the lion of no-self. (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) དབག་མེད་སེང་གེའི་སྒྲ་དང་ལྡན།, , , Possessing the sound of the lion of no-self. And the true no-self is the Thus-gone essence. (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) ཡང་དག་བདག་མེད་དེ་བཞིན་ཉིད།, , , And the true no-self is the Thus-gone essence. The completely pure Dharma of no-self. (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) རྣམ་པར་དག་པ་བདག་མེད་ཆོས།, , , The completely pure Dharma of no-self. And so on, it should be known from the vast tantric texts that the self is not mentioned, and those who say that there are two selves, the existing self and the non-existing self, become Buddhas, are revered by many in India, and the Sthavira-nikāya, and in Tibet the Jonangpas, and the Riwo Gandenpas, and the Bodongpas, etc. say, but it is not the intention of the Sugata, so those who speak of the Buddha's teachings in this way are the teachings with delusion, as the great teacher Vasubandhu said in the ninth chapter of the Treasury, and the great teacher Chandrakirti refuted it extensively in the root commentary of the Introduction, so those who desire liberation should think well, and those with eyes should be careful after the blind fall into the great abyss. In this land of snow, there is no self even in terminology, and those who say that persons, sentient beings, and individuals are substantially existent, and although the self is not established as a substance, the results of actions,

If, taking the ground as a basis, it is held that there is no contradiction by valid cognition of reasoning, that it is established by valid cognition of convention, and that there is a permanent self that is different in meaning from the aggregates, and that it is held that there are no persons or sentient beings, etc., this contradicts all tenets from the Vaibhashika to the Madhyamaka, and it has gone to abide in the tenets of those who have become external to the teachings of the Teacher. For if the self does not even exist in name, it cannot be established by relying on it, and it contradicts both scripture and the world. If even the Vaibhashika does not accept a substantially existent person, then what need is there to mention the higher tenets? The commentary on the Abhidharmakosha says, "But if it is said to exist imputedly, then we also say so." And, "Therefore, the person exists imputedly, like the aggregates and the continuum, etc." And, "Therefore, some grasp at the person, and some grasp at the non-existence of everything, which is a fault in this teaching." So it is. From the perspective of our own school, if the imputed self established by valid cognition of convention (303b) is found as the basis for karmic results, and it is established without contradiction by valid cognition of reasoning, then such a self can withstand scrutiny. Because it is not an object contradicted by valid cognition of reasoning, and because it is established when examined by valid cognition of convention. If it is accepted, then if there is a self that is the basis for karmic results that can withstand scrutiny, it should not be refuted as the self of a person when examined. And the co-emergent object of the self that exists without examination should not be established by valid cognition of convention. Because the valid cognition of convention is the mind that grasps the correct conventional truth of the world. Because what is measured and grasped by that mind appears to be true, and although worldly people who cling to it say it is valid cognition, it is not actually valid cognition, because it is an erroneous consciousness. It is established, because in this Prasangika school, it is held that all consciousness that grasps the conventional is produced from being defiled by the power of ignorance. In particular, the Jonangpas say that the self of ultimate truth is permanent, and that the self imputed as conventional truth is completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn. This statement only refutes the unexamined conventional self, and after examining it in ultimate truth, it establishes that such a dharma is completely non-existent, thereby applying endless slander to both truths and falling into the extremes of permanence and annihilation.
