It is not the nature of the aggregates. For example, when it is said that trees are a forest, the collection of trees is a forest, but it is not the nature of the trees. If it were, each tree would become a forest. Similarly, when it is said that the aggregates are "I," it is said that the collection of aggregates is called "I," but it is not said that the nature of the aggregates is "I." If it were, each aggregate would become "I." Secondly, it is not a protector, nor is it a tamer or a witness. Because it does not exist, it is not an assembly. An assembly cannot be a protector, etc., because it is not a substance, so it is nothing. The Blessed One said, "Oneself is one's own protector, and oneself is also one's own enemy. (290n) Having done good and bad deeds, oneself is one's own witness." Therefore, "I" is said to be a protector and a witness. It is also said, "By taming oneself well, the wise will attain high status." If it is said to tame the "I," then merely an assembly without substance is not a protector, nor is it a tamer or a witness, because that assembly does not exist, so the assembly is not "I." Thirdly, examples. Two meanings. The first meaning is: At that time, the places where its various components gather would become the chariot itself, and the chariot and "I" are the same. If it is thought that the assembly is no different from the one with the assembly, therefore protectors, etc., are established in the one with the assembly, that is not correct. Because it has already been said that the various dharmas cannot be the same and "I." If those who say that the aggregates are "I" think that the various ones with the assembly are "I," then when it is said that the chariot is the collection of various components, the various parts such as screws existing in the collection of various components of the chariot would also become the chariot itself, which is also unreasonable, because it will be denied below that the components are the chariot. Therefore, the chariot and "I" are the same, how could the various ones with the assembly of aggregates become "I"? Therefore, the sutra says, "The word 'I' is the mind of the demon, you are the one being watched. This aggregate of formations is empty, and there are no sentient beings in it. Just like the collection of various components, relying on it is called a chariot. Similarly, relying on the various aggregates, it is called a conventional sentient being." The second meaning is: The sutra says that it exists relying on the aggregates, therefore merely the gathering of aggregates

It is not truly existent. The mere aggregation of the skandhas is not 'I', because the sutra says that based on the skandhas, 'I', 'mine', 'sentient being', and 'polluter' are nominally designated. The second point is: If it is said to be shape, then shape only exists in things with form. Then, for you, those things with form themselves become 'I'. The aggregates of mind, etc., are not the nature of 'I', because those minds, etc., have no shape. Moreover, the mere aggregation of spokes, etc., is not a chariot, but when the spokes, etc., have a difference in shape, then the name 'chariot' is obtained. Similarly, the mere aggregation of form, etc., is not 'I', but if it is said that the shape of the arrangement of form, etc., is 'I', that is not correct. Because shape exists in things with form, and you consider those things with form themselves to be 'I'. If that is the case, then the nature of the aggregation of the four skandhas of mind, etc., is not 'I', because those minds, etc., have no shape. In the third aspect, refuting substance and action without an agent. The first point is: The taker and the immediately preceding cause of what is taken are not the same substance. If that were the case, then the agent and the action would become the same. The immediately preceding cause, 'I' itself, and the substance of the skandhas to be taken as the immediately preceding cause, should not be the same, because if that were the case, then the action and the agent would become the same, and therefore, form, a pot, and a potter, which have the four elements as their cause, would also become the same. The scripture says: 'If the wood is fire, then the agent and the action become the same.' The second point is: If it is thought that there is action without an agent, that is not correct, because without an agent there is no action. If it is thought that there is no agent as the immediately preceding cause, but there is action taken as the immediately preceding cause, i.e., the aggregation of the immediately preceding causes of form, etc., that is not correct, because if there is no agent as the cause, then action will also not exist. The scripture says: 'Therefore, the taker and the action are not other, and it is not the immediately preceding cause itself. I am not without an immediately preceding cause, and it cannot be determined that it is non-existent.' Therefore, where the agent is not observed, but action also exists, and the ripening also exists, it should be known that this is refuting the truly existent agent. Furthermore, the agent that is established based on worldly convention and has become a branch of terminology is not refuted, as it is said: Ignorance.
