And the person associated with this is also manifestly accumulating merit. Thus it is widely spoken. Third, because the Thubpa (Buddha) said that the self is earth, water, fire, wind, consciousness, and space, these six elements, and the six sources of contact such as the eye, are shown based on the six supports of contact, and by holding the mind and mental phenomena. Therefore, the Thubpa said that the self is neither those nor just a collection of those. Therefore, the mind that grasps at self in those is not reasonable. Because the Thubpa said in the Sutra, "Great King, the person is the six elements, the six sources of contact, and the eighteen mental near-goings." The self is earth, water, fire, wind, consciousness, and space, these six elements, and from the eye etc. to the mind, gathered and shown based on the six supports of contact, that is, based on the six objects such as form, the six pleasant mental near-goings, the six unpleasant mental near-goings, and the six neutral mental near-goings, a total of eighteen, by holding the mind and mental phenomena, it is designated as self. Therefore, because the Thubpa definitely said so, the self is neither the otherness of those dharmas nor just a collection of those, because those dharmas cannot be the self, therefore, the mind that grasps at self in those dharmas is not reasonable. Therefore, since the yogi does not see the object of grasping at self outside or different from the skandhas, he knows that self and what belongs to self are not real, and by cutting off the continuum of the five skandhas, he becomes nirvana without taking rebirth, so this analysis of no-self (291b) is very beautiful. Second, there are two: that which is unrelated should not be taken as an antidote, and refuting it through example. First, when no-self is realized, the permanent self is abandoned, and this is not desired as a basis for grasping at self. Therefore, it is wonderful to say that knowing no-self completely uproots the view of self. Some think that when the self is grasped as one with the skandhas, and later the path of seeing is attained, the object-possessor is abandoned but the object is not abandoned, and it is said that the self of the non-object heretics is abandoned, and this kind of saying is highly respected. According to that side's view, as long as the continuum of the skandhas is not cut off, grasping at self will continue to arise, because the basis of grasping at self, the skandhas,
