The wise say that this is the fruit of discriminating from the ground. Therefore, as it is said: If things inherently exist, then what is the merit of seeing emptiness? Seeing with conceptual thought is bondage, and that is what is being prevented here. So it is said. What is being eliminated by this teaching? All the reasoning spoken in the vast Madhyamaka scriptures by the Bhagavan and the bodhisattvas who have entered the great bhumi, together with their disciples, is spoken solely to reverse the conceptual thoughts that have been inverted since beginningless time. Therefore, reversing one conceptual thought does not mean generating another special conceptual thought. For example, reversing the conceptual thought that things are not empty and exist, does not mean generating the conceptual thought that emptiness, which is the non-existence of things, does not exist. If one thinks like that, then that itself is a bondage that has not entered the reality of the object. The teacher says: Here, existence itself is prevented, not that non-existence is completely grasped. When it is said that it is not black, it is not said that it is white. So it is said. Some fools with wrong views about this principle of emptiness say that not wanting either existence or non-existence will turn into a nihilistic view of nothingness. If it follows that it is a nihilistic view because one does not want both existence and non-existence, then why can't it also follow that it is a permanent view, an unchanging Yungdrung, because one does not want both existence and non-existence? If one thinks that refuting existence is to see it as non-existence, then why is it not the case that refuting non-existence is to see it as existence? Because the reason is the same. Therefore, the teacher says: Because of knowing correctly as it is, one does not desire existence and non-existence. Therefore, if it becomes non-existence, why does it not become existence? If existence is refuted, then in effect, this is the restoration of non-existence. Likewise, if non-existence is refuted, why is existence not restored? So it is said. Therefore: It is neither existent nor non-existent, nor both existent and non-existent, nor is it the self of both. That which is liberated from the four extremes, that is what the Madhyamikas know. And so on. The great scholar Tsongkhapa says: All phenomena should be considered to be established by conventional valid cognition, therefore, in the conventional, it is not non-existent, it is not inherently existent, and existence in name (267b) is sufficient to establish existence.

exists, because it does not exist in the ultimate sense, so it cannot be said that it does not exist, therefore it exists as the dharma that establishes the basis. Even in the eyes of the noble ones, it exists in the manner of the disappearance of dualistic appearances. Thus they say, and the great Jonangpa says: The ultimate truth is not that everything does not exist, the conventional truth is not that everything exists. Thus they say. Those who explain in this way have perverted that treatise, and the nectar of the Madhyamaka scriptures, the essence of the Buddha's teachings, has been contaminated by the four great poisonous waters of extreme views, like the ocean. According to their view: Neither existent, nor non-existent, nor both existent and non-existent, nor is it the nature of both. Liberation from the four extremes, that is what the Madhyamika understands. Because it is only like that. In this way, the reality of all dharmas encompassed by the two truths becomes non-elaborate. Because in both truths, in their respective positions, existence or non-existence, or the extreme of permanence or annihilation, are regarded as solid entities, and it is extremely difficult to destroy the fortress of life. Those who wish to protect the precious and wonderful teachings of the Madhyamaka, and who have the power of accumulation and purification, how can they afford to be indifferent to this view? According to those views, all the terms of samsara and nirvana will not be established. If it exists by nature, it cannot be changed, and if it does not exist, it is devoid of action, therefore it is impossible to abandon the conceptualizations of clinging to existence and clinging to non-existence in the two truths. The two truths also cannot be the subject and the predicate, because what exists cannot be the subject and the predicate of what does not exist, and what does not exist cannot be the subject and the predicate of what exists. Therefore, those who seek liberation must abandon both extremes of clinging to existence and clinging to non-existence, because without abandoning them, liberation cannot be attained. Considering this, the Bhagavan also said in all the scriptures of the Great and Small Vehicles, such as the 《Queen Mother Sutra》, the 《Samadhiraja Sutra》, the 《Ratnakuta Sutra》, the 《Lankavatara Sutra》, and the teachings to Katyayana, that both views of clinging to existence and clinging to non-existence should be abandoned. The teacher also said in all the treatises that both of these should be abandoned. As the root text says: Those of small intellect, who on all things, view as existent and view as non-existent, they cannot see, the near peace of quiescence.
