Refutation of the Mind-Only School. Refutation of the Mind-Only School. Secondly, there are two parts: the former position and its refutation. The first part includes: establishing the meaning of the scriptures, and thereby demonstrating one's own tenets. The first part includes: the reason why the prince realizes the three realms as only mind, and revealing the reason for cognition even when external objects do not exist. The first part is: Without seeing grasping where there is no grasped, Therefore, one thoroughly understands that the three realms are only consciousness, The bodhisattva abiding in wisdom knows thus, The nature of only-consciousness is what one will realize. Those who claim to be Mind-Only cannot tolerate the views expounded by the Madhyamaka school, so in order to eliminate their own fabricated tenets, it is stated here: The sixth-ground bodhisattva who abides in the practice of the Prajñāpāramitā will realize the ultimate true nature of all dharmas as only consciousness. Because he realizes that the mind has no grasped, he also does not see the grasping related to it. He merely knows that these three realms are devoid of external objects. Therefore, through long-term habituation, he thoroughly realizes a kind of inexpressible consciousness that is free from grasper and grasped, in the manner of individual self-awareness. The second is: Just as when the wind moves the ocean, Great waves arise in the same way, From the all-seeds, the Ālaya, By its own power, only consciousness arises. If everything is only consciousness and there is no external object, then how does the consciousness that appears as external objects such as form arise? Just as when the wind blows the ocean, large and small waves arise according to conditions, from all the seeds of all defiled dharmas, that is, from the Ālaya-consciousness, from beginningless time, in a momentary continuum, the habit of clinging to grasper and grasped is fully matured, thereby obtaining its own existence, and constantly ceasing. Therefore, the particularity of the habit in the Ālaya-consciousness becomes the cause for the arising of consciousness related to its own form and subsequent ones, and through the condition of its own power being fully matured, impure other-dependent consciousness arises. However, children will think that this is grasper and grasped, but in reality, there is not the slightest external object that is different from consciousness. For example, those who claim that Īśvara is the creator: a cow is a cow.

the cause of. Like crystal water, and the branches of the banyan tree. That is the cause of all sentient beings. Just as Ishvara is considered the creator of beings, the proponents of the Alaya-vijñana also say that the Alaya is the cause of the seeds from which all things arise. Ishvara is permanent, while the Alaya is impermanent, this is just one difference. Second, therefore, what is the nature of other-power? Things become the cause of imputed existence, and without external objects appearing, existence and all elaborations are not objects, but are self-existent. The reason for establishing the existence of the Alaya is, as stated in the scriptures, therefore, if it is said that the nature of other-power is the cause of the imputed existence of things as the two selves, then it must be admitted, because it is considered the basis of all networks of conceptualization. Otherwise, without a basis for confusion, nothing can be mistaken for the two selves. For example, the cause of mistaking a rope for a snake, and the cause of mistaking a pot, etc., if not relying on earth, etc., will not arise in space, etc. Therefore, even without external objects, for the discrimination of blue, etc., as the subject, your cause is established as other-power, because you are the cause of all afflictions and purification. Therefore, the scriptures say: For what does not exist, one truly sees it as empty; what remains here, that is what truly exists here. To fully understand as it is, that is to enter emptiness without inversion. And so on, emptiness is well grasped. Relying on this scripture, the Shravaka schools believe that the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas are empty of self, person, etc., and the remaining skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas and selflessness are self-existent. And, the Yogacara school believes that other-power is empty of the parikalpita, (206b) other-power and the parinishpanna are not empty, the imputed dharma is empty of others, the dharma and dharmata themselves are not empty.
