The Concordance of Emptiness (208a) Because all the cited examples cling to meanings that are inconsistent with the examples themselves, and are vehemently stated. Therefore, the Blessed One and the noble Nāgārjuna, etc., extensively, on the basis of the concordance of what is accepted by others, through one and different, separate, etc., to argue for the profound emptiness, all complete expressions of these three ways are said to be inverted reasoning, and through these arguments to argue for the profound emptiness is erroneous, and laboriously explained, thereby indirectly preventing the Dharma of profound emptiness, this situation becomes very prevalent near the end of the final five hundred years. The third part includes: the defense against error and the refutation of it. The first part is: If eye-consciousness is impossible in sleep, Then only mind-consciousness exists. Its appearance clings to external objects. If it is considered here as in a dream, Then if there are no external objects, etc., in sleep, Because sleep causes the decline of eye-consciousness, etc., thereby making the sense consciousnesses impossible. However, the mind-consciousness deluded by sleep only appears as an object, because the consciousness of the dream clings to the appearance of that consciousness as an external object. If it is considered here as in a dream where there is consciousness without an object, Then the second part is: In the dream, all eighteen realms are shown to be false. This situation is also similar to the waking state. Therefore, the existence or non-existence of object and consciousness, and the similarity of example and meaning, are shown, totaling three. The first part is: Just as your external object in the dream, Has not arisen, so too has consciousness not arisen. The eye and the object of the eye, and the mind produced by it, All three are false. The remaining three, ear, etc., also do not arise. Just as in the Yogācāra school, in your view, external objects, etc., do not arise in the dream, so too does consciousness not arise, Because the reasons for their arising or not arising (208b) are the same. Because in the illusion of the dream, both exist, while in waking, neither exists. However, when seeing things in waking, Just as the eye, form, and consciousness are determined, so too when completely determining the object in the dream, the eye and the object of the eye, and the mind produced by it, all three
