If one does not examine arising and ceasing, but merely imitates the world's expressions, then, upon examination, the arising, etc., of conventional truth (264a) would not be what is to be refuted by a sign, but would become what is to be established. If that were the case, then if the Madhyamikas were to examine, it would also become meaningless to negate the respective entities and natures of the arising, etc., of conventional truth. If, upon examination, one were to posit arising and ceasing, then arising and ceasing would become amenable to examination. If one were to desire such an examinable arising and ceasing of dependent origination, then unless one were to accept such a thing as a third truth that is neither of the two truths, it would be impossible for a dharma established by such examination to exist in either of the two truths, and who could establish it in that way? Therefore, one must think carefully. Literally, when the Madhyamikas posit the arising and ceasing of cause and effect of dependent origination without examination, they do not impute anything to the merely apparent conventional truth of the world, so when they engage in accepting and rejecting terminology, they do not deviate from the nature of conventional truth, because they state things without adding or subtracting from what is known. Even so, if, upon examination, one were to posit arising and ceasing of dependent origination, etc., then one would be imputing to both truths, so when engaging in ultimate truth, one would deviate from the nature of both truths, because from the perspective of examination, one would be falsely imputing the establishment of conventional phenomena of dependent origination when they are not established, and by presuming that they are established, one would be negating the ultimate truth that is free from arising and ceasing, and thus one would also be slandering the ultimate truth. Therefore, some Tibetans say that the Madhyamikas' positing of the arising and ceasing of dependent origination by their own system's reasoning is a unique characteristic, because the arising (264b) and ceasing of something like an unreal illusion is well established, so it is praised for the sake of eliminating the extreme of nihilism. But that is completely devoid of the flavor of Madhyamika. The very arising and ceasing of something like an unreal illusion, which appears in the words of the teachers who speak of freedom from extremes, is a proof that, from the perspective of examination and noble ones, the arising and ceasing of dependent origination, like the arising and ceasing of an illusion, is free from arising and ceasing, and it is not possible to dream even in a dream that it is a proof that there is truly existing arising and ceasing there. Therefore, those who speak in this way, alas!

Therefore, without careful examination, the way of establishing (the two truths) by merely this kind of conditionality contradicts the substantialist clinging that believes in the arising of the four extremes. Therefore, the way the Madhyamikas establish the two truths is far superior to the way the substantialists establish the two truths. Because for all knowable things of all beings such as Buddhas and sentient beings, it does not contradict the worldly conventions. This is just this much. My father, the great Repa, said in his song: "The distinctions of the two truths that are established in relation, I only speak of them within the scope of what is accepted by others in the world. Now, if we are free from the elaborations of the world, concerning the truth and falsehood of relative phenomena, all the characteristics of arising and ceasing, and all affirmations and negations of existence and non-existence, being and non-being, in that state of unconditioned peace, what is the view and practice of our own tradition? Once our own tradition disappears, there is no need to refute other traditions, so do not even give the name to Madhyamaka." Remembering the immeasurable kindness he bestowed, I prostrate with all things. Therefore, merely with this kind of dependent arising of conditions, all views of causelessness are eliminated. Because causelessness is not dependent on anything, and dependent arising has the meaning of dependence. The arising from Isvara (自在天,Lord,Īśvara,伊濕伐羅) and other permanent, singular, dissimilar, and incoherent causes contradicts dependent arising. Because if it arises from a single cause, it is not necessary to depend on other conditions. And a permanent cause, being devoid of action, does not need to depend. If it arises from a dissimilar cause, it also does not need to depend on its own causes and conditions. If it arises from an incoherent cause, it also does not need to depend on aggregation. Arising from self, other, or both also contradicts dependent arising. Because the self does not depend on itself. And it is contradictory for the self to act on itself. If the self is not established, then neither the dependent nor the object of dependence can be established. If it is established, then there is no need to depend. For the other, if it is not established, then neither the dependent nor the object of dependence can be established, and it is not reasonable in the other. If it is established, then there is no need to depend, and if it depends, it would be too extreme. Arising from both is also touched by both faults, so it contradicts dependence. Therefore, in the Rice Seedling Sutra, it says: That which arises from the cause of the seed is also arising.
