and knowledge, valid cognition and object of valid cognition, what is to be established (262b) and what establishes, what is to be abandoned and the antidote, with outflows and without outflows, transcending and not transcending the world, with entities and without entities, permanent and impermanent, conditioned and unconditioned, consciousness and wisdom, false and true, characteristic and nature, conventional and ultimate, samsara and nirvana, and so on. In short, all phenomena encompassed by duality are established in dependence on each other, and apart from that, there is nothing that is established independently by its own nature, so one will be liberated from the extremes of nihilism and eternalism. Such interdependence, causes and conditions, arising and ceasing, one and different, and so on, are reasonable in this way, and to establish them separately according to one's own system is to be outside the Buddha's teachings. As it says in the scripture: Those who cling to the self and all things, and to them as being the same or different, think that they understand the Buddha's teachings, but the wise do not think so. So it is. To view these as one and different is only the thought of children, not of noble ones. As it says in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: Not seeing the truth, one is arrogant in thinking of the world and nirvana as different entities, but seeing the truth, one is not arrogant in thinking of the world and nirvana as different entities. Therefore, the so-called "just this condition" means that whatever phenomenon is known in the world as the cause of a certain result, that is the cause of that result, and it shows that it is separate from other causes fabricated by the unseen Ishvara and Alaya-vijnana, and so on. When the Madhyamikas do not (263a) investigate, they establish conventional truth in the eyes of others, and merely saying that its arising and ceasing, cause and effect, are established in dependence on worldly conventions, this will completely harm the arising of the four extremes. Because it harms it, it can also prevent the view of those who claim that there is real arising and ceasing, and in order to be consistent with the reasoning that proves that all phenomena are unborn, the establishment of interdependence and dependent arising, arising and ceasing, etc., is given the highest praise. If it is such interdependence, then the pervasion that establishes emptiness also abides in the acceptance of the conventional rationality known to other worlds, but not in the Madhyamika's own system, the Madhyamika's own.

Because in the treatises of the Madhyamaka school, if one analyzes the conventional truth, one cannot find a basis to establish it. Therefore, using the reason of dependent arising and cessation, which is accepted by others, to negate the four extremes of arising and cessation that others assert is valid in terms of words. Although there are cases where arising and cessation themselves negate arising and cessation, there is no error in meaning, because this refers to the occasion when something arises from causes and conditions, so it is said that it does not arise. It is precisely because one does not rely on words but relies on meaning. "That which arises from conditions is said to be unborn; this is what the Sugata has declared." So, should the Madhyamaka school use the reason of dependent arising to establish conventional arising and so on in name? If one uses this reason to establish the conventional arising and so on of the four extremes, it will become a contradictory reason, so it cannot be established. And one cannot use this reason to establish the conventional arising and so on of dependent arising, because the reason and the subject are not different. Like this, establishing conventional arising and cessation and cause and effect through dependent arising is done at a time when there is no analysis. If, after analysis, one uses the reason of dependent arising to establish the arising and so on of dependent arising, then it will be like an elephant bathing, meaningless. If, after analysis, one negates the four extremes of arising and then establishes the arising and so on of dependent arising, then it is like having previously negated arising and so on in both truths through various reasonings, abiding in the inexpressible Madhyamaka, but now falling away from that and re-entering the realm of the substantialists. Because initially one strives to establish conventional arising as reasonable. In reality, if a being with a mind that clings to characteristics and substantial arising and cessation makes an imputation, then whether this imputation is caused by the four extremes of arising and cessation or by the arising and cessation of dependent arising, there is no difference. Just as when bound, there is no difference between a golden chain and an iron chain in terms of binding. Moreover, if after analysis, one strives to establish the arising and cessation of dependent arising, then does this arising and cessation belong to the ultimate truth or to the conventional truth? If it is the former, then it is not reasonable, because in the ultimate truth, which is free from arising and cessation, who can establish it in this way? If it is the latter, then it is also not reasonable, because the conventional truth of the Madhyamaka school
