These vegetables and so on are conventionally imputed to exist, so they do not exist in ultimate reality, but are said to exist in worldly convention. As it is said: "Whatever is destroyed or analyzed by wisdom, that wisdom does not enter, like a pot of water, it exists conventionally, but is different in ultimate reality." Just as it is admitted that coarse things are imputed to exist, similarly, if forms and so on are analyzed, they do not exist, but in worldly convention, without analysis, all things (༢༦༠བ) appear, so if they do not exist in ultimate reality, then in terms of language, they would be like the child of a barren woman, and would not avoid falling into complete non-existence. This is not the same, because the basis of imputation, such as the four elements, exists as substances, so it is reasonable that the pot imputed to be a pot by that cause exists as a result in conventional truth, but according to the Madhyamikas, all phenomena are merely imputed, so the substance of their cause does not exist at all. If it is thought that all of these will inevitably fall into the fault of being like the child of a barren woman, it is not reasonable, because it is not possible to establish that the basis of imputation, such as the earth, exists as a substance. As it says in the Four Hundred: "Without form and so on, how can a pot exist? Likewise, without wind and so on, form also does not exist." And in the Precious Garland it says: "Earth, water, fire, and wind, each one is not self-existent. Without three, one does not exist, and without one, three do not exist. If three do not exist, one does not exist, and if one does not exist, three do not exist. Therefore, they are not self-existent separately. How can a collection arise?" Thus, even the atoms of earth, water, fire, and wind, are not established as being uniquely existent without relying on other atoms, because without conditions, a cause does not arise by its own nature. If we assume that the basis of imputation exists as a substance, then it is not reasonable for a conventional substance to arise from an ultimate substance, because from a permanent thing that is truly established in ultimate reality, a non-existent thing that is not established there cannot arise. As it says in the Four Hundred: "How can a thing that arises from a permanent thing become impermanent? Cause and effect have different characteristics, and have never been seen to be the same." Therefore, imputed existence is like perceiving a mere image imputed in dependence on the collection of a mirror and a face, and like imputing a house in dependence on pillars, and like

Just as a forest is established on the support of trees, and just as in a dream one expects a sprout of unarisen nature to arise from a seed of unarisen nature, so all established things, their establishment is also established on the support of existence, and can be understood in this way. As it is said in the scriptures: How does the Tathagata emanate? He emanates with the perfection of miraculous powers, and so on, like a city of Gandharvas, like a mirage or a dream. Thus it is said. Secondly, there are two: the actual explanation of conventional arising as dependent origination, and the benefits of understanding dependent origination. The first is: Why is it that things do not arise from no cause, from the cause of Ishvara, etc., or from both self and other? Therefore, they arise dependently. If you refute arising from the four extremes, then how is it certain that consciousness, earth sprouts, etc., arise conventionally from ignorance and action? In order not to refute the unexamined worldly convention, these fruits, such as sprouts, will arise by relying on the cause and condition of the appearance of seeds, because, as mentioned above, things do not arise in either of the two truths from no cause, from the cause of Ishvara, etc., or from self, other, or both. That is, as the Blessed One said: The sign of the Dharma is this: when this exists, that arises; when this is born, this is born; that is, conditioned by ignorance, actions, etc. It is said in the Ratnavali: When this exists, that arises, for example, when long exists, short exists. When this is born, that is born, for example, when a lamp is born, light is born. And it is said in the scriptures: The agent depends on the action, and the action also depends on the agent itself. Apart from arising dependently, no cause of establishment is seen. Likewise, the proximate cause should be known, in order to eliminate action and agent. The agent and the action should be known as the remaining things. Thus it is said, it is only these conditions, and this is spoken in accordance with the world. Therefore, arising in dependence on only these conditions is the everyday establishment of the world.
