Since it is not, things are devoid of inherent existence. Therefore, if there is a birth established as a thing, then other than arising from the four extremes, there is no other possible thought, so even if it is thought to arise from Ishvara etc., it can only arise from any of the four extremes, and there is no arising from a fifth extreme, so it is said that things are devoid of inherent existence. Because arising from self, other, and both, and arising without depending on causes, do not exist, therefore it is so. Second, refuting the contradiction with what is seen, and refuting the debate that if there is no inherent existence, there is also a contradiction in existing in name, these two. (256n) First, the way the unwise see due to the power of ignorance, and the way it does not appear to the wise, these two. First, things and non-things, seeing the contradiction of these two. The first is: Whoever is like a cloud, thick with ignorance in the world, if that exists, then all realms will appear as inverted. Then, what is it that blue and other things are not born, and do not become objects, and even if they are not grasped, they still appear in front of us again and again? Seeing the realms is not as they are in their own nature, but appears as inverted to those with manifest attachment, because whoever obscures the nature of space, the cloud of rain that obscures the nature of space, and the darkness of ignorance that obscures the blue nature of emptiness, exists in the world. Second, example and meaning, two. The first is: Just as the power of dizziness, some people see hairnets, two moons, peacock feathers, bees, etc., and hold them upside down. Depending on the obscuration of ignorance, one does not see it, but how does one see it upside down? By the power of ignorance, it appears as such to what is not it, thus showing it by way of example: Just as by the power of dizziness, to some who have dizziness, hairnets and two moons, and peacock feathers and bees, etc., which do not exist, even though they have become the nature of being unborn, they are still held as things themselves and inverted. The second is: Likewise, by the power of the fault of ignorance, the unwise see aggregates, which are realized by various wisdoms. For example, beings also do not see their own nature due to the power of the fault of ignorance.

Therefore, the unwise accumulate meritorious deeds, non-meritorious deeds, and unwavering deeds, so that the aggregation of the vessel and essence of samsara like this (256b) can only be understood by the wise. The sutra says, "This is because of ignorance that there are actions." It also says, "The beings associated with ignorance will accumulate meritorious deeds, will accumulate non-meritorious deeds, and will also accumulate unwavering deeds." It also says, "When ignorance ceases, actions cease." The Blessed One said so. The second is: If karma arises depending on delusion, and it does not arise without delusion, only the unwise are sure to understand this. The sun of virtue dispels the thick darkness, and the wise understand emptiness and are liberated. If in this way of arising and ceasing, the non-self-nature of karma arises depending on the non-self-nature of delusion. If there is no entity of delusion, then the entity of actions will not arise, only foolish and unwise people will be sure of this. Because they have not realized that both are unborn from the beginning, but are attached to the action of ignorance to produce karma, and without it, karma will not arise. Therefore, the wise who see the true nature, the sun of virtuous wisdom, dispelling the thick darkness of delusion, will be liberated from samsara. Because the sutras such as "actions conditioned by ignorance" say that dependent arising is like an illusion, and understanding the emptiness of non-self-nature, they abandon ignorance and do not cling to actions. Second, debate. There are two answers. The first is: If things do not exist in reality, then in convention they are like the child of a barren woman. They will become non-existent, therefore, they exist by their own nature. These forms and so on exist by their own nature in reality. If forms and other things do not exist in reality, then in convention they are like the child of a barren woman, and these conventional truths will also become non-existent in convention, which is unreasonable, (257a) because they exist in convention, so it is said. Second, it shows that the metaphor is uncertain. This accusation does not apply to the Madhyamaka school, because oneself
