Because showing the ultimate truth in accordance with knowledge does not harm grasping at reality with reasoning, and because upon being taught, one immediately understands the meaning and attains liberation (247b). Well then, in the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it says, "All the sūtras that teach that all dharmas are without essence are provisional, and those that teach that the completely imputed is nonexistent, and that the dependent and the thoroughly established exist, are definitive." How is that? To this, the Mind-Only proponents say, "That is just as it sounds. In the middle turning of the wheel, such as the Mother Sutra, teaching that all dharmas are without essence is provisional, and in the final turning of the wheel, such as this sutra, those that teach the presence or absence of the three characteristics separately are definitive." That is what they say. That is just speaking without having understood the intention of the Bhagavan. Because the direct teaching that all dharmas are devoid of essence, etc., is definitive. Because there is no harm in that, and because it prevents and will prevent the four extremes of arising, etc., which are hoped to be harmful. And, if all dharmas were not devoid from the beginning, then it would contradict all the terms of past and future. And, the latter two characteristics are harmed by reasoning because the dependent is established as substance, which was previously prevented. And, if that did not exist, then a nature wandering apart from the subject of dharma would also be impossible. We Madhyamikas say this: From the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra and others, it is only shown according to the tenets of the Madhyamikas. The compassionate ones did not teach according to the wishes of the Mind-Only proponents. Because in those sutras, all the distinctions of presence and absence of the three characteristics that are spoken of are merely provisional in terms of what is grasped by words. Its meaning is not just as it sounds, therefore, the definitive meaning is that all three characteristics are taught to be without essence. Because it is not taught according to the wishes of the Mind-Only proponents, it cannot be established as a sutra teaching Mind-Only. Seeing this essential point, the protector of the three realms, Drigungpa, said, "The sutra teaching Mind-Only is especially clear as a sutra teaching Madhyamaka." Thus, he made a great lion's roar. Therefore, all the distinctions made by the various proponents of realism, such as the Mind-Only school, as contradicting both truths, do not abide in the intended meaning of the scriptures of the Teacher. If they did abide, then all the scriptures would become self-contradictory and

Because it contradicts the vow of not fearing harm caused by..., and it contradicts that all scriptures have different words but the same meaning, and the teacher is not omniscient, because he teaches others before he has determined his own final conclusion. If you do not understand this point, some people like Zilongpa nowadays say that the self-traditions of all four philosophical schools have become the correct establishment of Madhyamaka, because they teach the Dharma principles that establish Madhyamaka by eliminating the extremes of permanence and annihilation of their own traditions. This is not established, because the proponents of the lower three philosophical schools lead the meaning of the scriptures spoken by the teacher to the back of their own traditions, and if they lead it to the back of other traditions, they prohibit explaining the meaning of the scriptures in that way, and only verbally say that they value the teacher's teachings. Because the teacher did not distinguish the four Madhyamakas established by reason that is free from permanence and annihilation for each individual, if they were distinguished, then the knowable would have four different ways of existing that are in accordance with the two truths and the four philosophical schools, in which case the lower philosophical schools would not be harmed by the reason of the upper philosophical schools, and therefore it would not be possible to find the sound of the expression that establishes which philosophical school is good or bad, whether there is a path to liberation, etc., without examination. Therefore, if the establishment established by the realists is said to abide in the intention of the scripture mentioned as the source of their desire, how could it become the ultimate intention of the teacher? For this reason, most of the ultimate meanings established by the realists must be interpreted as provisional, and if one believes that the provisional scriptures are the literal ultimate meaning, then it will go against the teacher's intention. The Ornament of the Sutras says: If you completely cling to the literal meaning, you will become arrogant and your wisdom will decline, because you have abandoned the well-spoken words, you will be obscured by anger towards the Dharma. The language meaning of the intermediate wheel is the ultimate meaning, and the final wheel has both provisional and ultimate meanings, because the teaching that all dharmas are without self-nature is the ultimate meaning, and the teaching of other-power, alaya consciousness, self-awareness, self, and permanence, non-emptiness, cutting off lineage, determining lineage, and the ultimate three vehicles, etc., are provisional, because what is directly shown does not abide in the literal meaning.
