Because there is no Nirvana, and because there is Buddha-nature, therefore all sentient beings constantly possess the Tathagatagarbha. Because it is said so. What harms reality is: If according to the Tathagatagarbha contained in the general statement in the scriptures, then not to mention in the ultimate sense, it cannot be established even in name. Because the World Honored One personally prohibited it. Moreover, in the Nirvana Sutra and other scriptures, it is repeatedly said that all sentient beings do not have the merits of marks and characteristics. Moreover, in the impure stage, there is no permanence, bliss, self, and purity, which is repeatedly mentioned in the Jewel Garland, the Nirvana Sutra, and the root and commentary of the Uttaratantra Shastra. If it is believed that the Tathagatagarbha is the self and the uncreated thing, then all refutations of the self of externalists will become meaningless. The commentary says: Just as the Tathagatagarbha is taught as provisional meaning in the scriptures, so is Mind-Only also taught as provisional meaning. Some people believe that the Tathagatagarbha mentioned by the World Honored One refers to the mind itself, as it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: Mahamati, good and not good are like this, that is, the eight consciousnesses. Which eight consciousnesses? That is, the proclamation of the Tathagata's Alaya consciousness and so on. Because it is said so, since the Tathagatagarbha is of provisional meaning, so is the Alaya consciousness also of provisional meaning. Similarly, all the scriptural statements about the extinction of lineage, the definite lineage, the ultimate determination in the three vehicles, other-emptiness, and the teaching of self-awareness are all taught as provisional meaning through the scriptural statements of the Lankavatara Sutra. Second, if the knowable does not exist, then the knower can be easily eliminated, the Buddhas said so. If the knowable does not exist, then the elimination of the knower can be established, so first the knowable is refuted. If there is no object of knowledge, then the knowing consciousness can be easily eliminated, the Buddhas said so. Because the object and the subject are established in dependence on each other. Just as the teacher first engages in the accumulation of merit through generosity and so on, thereby entering the accumulation of wisdom, so first, the knowable is refuted through "whether external appearances exist or not," and so on, because if one realizes that the knowable is selfless, then later the elimination of the knower can be established, and it is for this reason. Moreover, if the knowable does not exist, then the knower does not exist, sometimes it can be realized only through oneself, and sometimes through a slightly approximate indication.

Will be realized. The third is: (246n) Having understood the history of the scriptures in this way, for those sutras that do not directly explain reality, but have other interpretive intentions, one must also realize that these sutras are spoken as provisional meanings in order to guide beings into the profound meaning, thereby guiding and proclaiming these sutras in order to lead those who should be tamed towards the ultimate meaning. For example, realists would say that the four great elements of earth, water, fire, and wind are not visible to the eye because they are tangible; but form is not like that, so it is visible to the eye. To this, the Madhyamikas would say that if this is the case, then as the cause of the four great elements, its tangibility is not perceived by the eye, then the result produced by it, namely form, cannot be established, so form is not visible to the eye, which in fact implies the definitive meaning through provisional words. Therefore, by skillful means, definitive realization can arise from provisional words. As it is said in the "Transcendental Praise": "The elements are not seen by the eye, how can what arises from them be seen by the eye? When this is said about form, your clinging to form should be abandoned." Furthermore, realists believe that impermanence as spoken of in the sutras refers to the previous existence changing into non-existence, thereby producing the subsequent existence. To this, the Madhyamikas believe that even if impermanence is said to be non-existent, it cannot be established that impermanence is truly existent, therefore the definitive meaning spoken by the realists (246b) turns into provisional meaning, therefore it is also necessary to understand that these scriptures are spoken in order to guide into the definitive meaning of emptiness. One should teach in this way. Whatever sutras directly explain emptiness, free from the eight extremes such as dependent origination, should be clearly understood as definitive, because the meaning of these sutras cannot be turned into anything else. In the noble Samadhiraja Sutra, it is said that the distinction between definitive and provisional meaning is like this: "Emptiness is what the Tathagata proclaimed, the distinction of the definitive sutra divisions."

Knowing. Whatever teaches beings, persons, and individuals, know that all those teachings are of provisional meaning. As it says, "In thousands of world realms, whatever sutras I have spoken, the letters are different but the meaning is the same; it is not possible to proclaim them all. If one contemplates a single object, then all of them become meditation; the many teachings of all the Buddhas, those greatly shown in the world, all teachings are without self. Whoever is skilled in meaning, if they train in this place, then attaining the Buddha's teachings is not difficult." As it says. In the Sutra Spoken by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it says: What is a sutra of provisional meaning? A sutra that speaks of conventional truth is of provisional meaning. What is a sutra of definitive meaning? A sutra that speaks for the sake of realizing ultimate truth is of definitive meaning. A sutra that speaks of various words and letters (247a) is of provisional meaning. A sutra that speaks of what is profound, difficult to see, and difficult to understand is of definitive meaning. A sutra that speaks of various names and languages for self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, individuals, persons, those born of power, sons of power, agents, and experiencers, as if those without a master have a master, is of provisional meaning. A sutra that speaks of emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-conceptualization, unorigination, non-arising, non-existence, no sentient beings, no life, no person, no self, and the doors of liberation is of definitive meaning. As it is said. Its meaning is: If the meaning of a sutra that is directly taught is contradicted by reasoning, it is of provisional meaning, because in order for disciples to initially enter the path and ripen their minds, it mostly teaches conventional truth through various words and letters, according to the inclinations of each individual. Although the direct expression of what is taught in this way is contradicted by reasoning, it is taught as a means of gradually guiding disciples. If the meaning of a sutra that is directly taught is not contradicted by reasoning, it is of definitive meaning, because in order for disciples to enter the result and liberate their minds, through the doors of profundity, difficulty to see, and primordial peace, the noble
