Do not cling to the formless. Whether one examines or not the formless with mind, it is not reasonable. If one examines, then if there is no form, one should not cling to the mind, because the two are relative. If one does not examine, even if there is mind, one should not cling to the formless, because it is known to exist in the world. Secondly, these were equally abandoned by the Buddha in the sutras of the way of wisdom, and spoken of in the Abhidharma. Formless with mind, it does not accord with the meaning of either definitive or provisional scriptures, because in the sutras of the way of wisdom such as the Mother Sutra, the Buddha has equally abandoned form etc., saying "Form is empty of its own nature" until "Consciousness is empty of its own nature." And in the Abhidharma, by distinguishing self-characteristics and general characteristics etc., it is explained that all five exist. Secondly, even if these two truths are destroyed, it will not be possible to establish your substance by negating it. To say formless with mind is a meaningless effort, because if one speaks like that, these two truths as explained above, which are in accordance with scripture, reason, and fame, will be destroyed. Even if these are destroyed (243b), it will not be possible to establish your other-powered substance by negating it. Thirdly, therefore, by such a sequence, things from the beginning have not arisen in that state, but are known to arise only in the nominal terms of the world. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that all things from the beginning have not arisen in that state, but have arisen only in the nominal terms of the world, because as it is said, it is established by such a sequence of scripture and reason. Secondly, regarding what is said in the sutras as mind-only, it is explained as a guiding meaning. The scripture and reason for its establishment are explained. Incidentally, the distinction between definitive and guiding meaning is explained, there are three points. First, whichever sutra says that there is no external appearance, and the mind appears in various ways, this is to eliminate attachment to form for those who are very attached to form, and this is also a guiding meaning. Even if the meaning of the Ten Bhumi Sutra allows such an explanation, it is certain in other sutras that it is mind-only, as it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: Whether external appearances exist or not, the mind appears in various ways, body and enjoyment and dwelling place, I have said are mind-only. Among them, body refers to eyes etc., objects refer to forms etc., and dwelling place refers to the vessel world, mind
