If it is said that since external objects are not established, and only mind appears as the body, etc., and this appears as external, different from the mind, therefore the three realms are only mind. Then, which sutra says that external objects are real, but the mind itself appears as various things such as the body? That is with a hidden meaning. The basis of the hidden meaning is particularly clinging to form, and due to that cause, falling into attachment, etc., accumulating great sins, and falling away from the two accumulations. For those, the Omniscient One, in order to abandon attachment, etc., which are caused by form, has taught to meditate on ugliness, so it is the reversal of form (244a). But that is not taught there in order to reverse it and for the sake of the mind, because that sutra is also said to be provisional. Second, there are two proofs: scriptural and logical. First, the proof that this sutra is provisional. By this, it also shows that other sutras like this are also provisional. The first is: This is said by the Teacher to be provisional, This is reasonable as provisional. This sutra, as will be explained below, is said by the Teacher to be provisional in the Lankavatara Sutra, and this will be explained as reasonable as provisional. The second is: Other sutras of this kind also, This sutra clarifies as provisional. This sutra is not only provisional, but also expressed by words that the Mind-Only school considers to be definitive, such as the truly existing self-nature. Such sutras, as mentioned in the Holy Unraveling of Intentions Sutra, etc., the absence of dependence, as well as the nature of other-poweredness, and the nature of perfect accomplishment exist. And also, "The consciousness of grasping is extremely deep and subtle, All seeds flow like a stream, If you grasp it as self, it is not right, Therefore I have not taught it to children." And many other sutras also say, "Just as a doctor gives medicine to a sick person, Likewise, the Buddha also said to sentient beings, It is only mind." Etc., these scriptural proofs clearly show that this is provisional, because the Teacher's teaching of Mind-Only is also taught in relation to the different intentions of the beings to be tamed. Just as a doctor uses poison as medicine according to different diseases. Therefore, for those who cling to reality, if from the beginning all things are denied as inherently existent (244b), they will be afraid, so they are taught in this way.

Because it accords with beings who do not understand no-self, therefore, in order to lead them into the state of no-self, the Buddha showed that things have self-nature. As the sutra says: "Whatever one delights in, one should first speak of that to them. A vessel of decaying Dharma should never be a vessel of true Dharma." Therefore, in the Lankavatara Sutra, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati, through questions and answers, described the Tathagatagarbha as permanent, self, true, real, existent, agent, possessing qualities, pervasive, and indestructible. This is because it is necessary, so it is said to be provisional meaning. In the auto-commentary of the Lankavatara Sutra, there is a detailed quote from "The Blessed One" to "should accord with no-self," please refer to it. The meaning is this: the Tathagatagarbha is permanent, real, true, and empty. There are three situations: intention, necessity, and harm to reality. The necessity is: to gradually guide sentient beings who are attached to reality. Especially to guide sentient beings of different capacities. As the sutra says: "For those who are timid, despise inferior beings, slander the truth, do not believe in the true Dharma, and have five faults of attachment to self, the Tathagatagarbha is spoken to abandon these faults." Therefore, it is necessary to speak in that way for those people. The intention is: in the holy land of India, it seems that two different views of Madhyamaka and Yogacara have emerged. Yogacarins believe that the meaning of the Gandavyuha Sutra and the Lankavatara Sutra and other sutras lies in the Alaya-consciousness, some people think that the Alaya-consciousness is the basis of pure seeds, some people think that the Alaya-consciousness is the emptiness of Parinispanna, and some people think that the immaculate mind is the ninth consciousness. Those who speak of no-self say that in the face of observation or the realization of the saints, there is a state of quiescence such as existence or non-existence, the Suchness of the Buddha and sentient beings is naturally pure, equal, but in the unexamined mundane world, in order to establish the difference between Samsara and Nirvana, the Buddha's lineage exists in the continuum of sentient beings, and considering that the complete Buddha's Rupakaya flows out from that lineage to suit the sentient beings to be tamed, so it is said. As the sutra says: "In order to flow out the complete Buddha's Rupakaya, and to show the Suchness of self-nature."
