If it is said that one knows because there is other-dependence, if that is the case, establishing other-dependence as substantially existent and positing memory as the proof, then this is for the sake of establishing self-awareness that is not established in the ultimate sense, because this specifically stated memory is not the proof of that self-awareness, because like self-awareness, memory is also not established in the ultimate sense, because it does not arise from self, other, etc. However, if one examines, memory cannot be established as the proof of self-awareness in the ultimate sense, but if one does not examine, in the face of conventional terms, one thinks that memory can establish self-awareness, then it is not established in the conventional either (228a), because if in the conventional, self-awareness and memory are definitely related as cause and effect like fire and smoke, then it could be established, but because that cause and effect relationship is not established, because self-awareness is not only the cause of memory, but if self-awareness itself is not established, then the result of having it as a cause, memory, is also not established. Thus, in the conventional, even if there is no self-awareness, only memory will arise, because it arises there from the conditions that give rise to memory. Just as seeing only water and fire does not necessarily require water crystal and fire crystal, but just as water and fire arise from rain and rubbing wood, rubbing mats, etc. Therefore, if you posit the cause of self-awareness, the previously arising result, memory, as the sign of establishment, then without self-awareness as the cause of such a result, memory, you will not have that result, memory. Therefore, unlike what you wish, self-awareness is not only not established as the cause of memory, but in order to establish self-awareness that is not established in both truths, the non-establishment of stating the words of memory is not the proof of self-awareness, just as the cause and effect relationship is not established like the object of the eye for sound being impermanent. Second, because it is other, it is not the object of memory, and abandoning what is similar to oneself, two. First: Self-awareness, if it is what depends on being established, even so, memory cannot be memory, because it is other, just as it arises in an unknowing continuum. This reason also destroys the differences. Also abandoning this way of examining, refuting as if admitting that there is self-awareness: The self-awareness that experiences both the object and knowledge with knowledge, even if it can be established, it is what depends on, even so, the later knowledge of memory cannot remember the previous object and knowledge.

It is not. Because the previous experience and the subsequent memory are different entities. For example (228b): Just as the memory of Maitreya's continuum does not remember the self-awareness and the experience of the object that arose in the hidden continuum that he does not understand. If it is said that although they are different, they are still remembered, because the previous experience and the subsequent memory belong to the same continuum and exist in the causal things. Then, because they are different, this reason also refutes the differences such as belonging to the same continuum and existing in causal things. Because whatever is different pervades that it is not the knowledge of experience, does not belong to the same continuum, and does not exist in causal things. For example, like the knowledge of other continuums. The subsequent memory and the knowledge of experience are different from the previous knowledge of self-awareness. And so on, to be widely refuted. The second is: Because whoever experienced the object, from then on, this memory does not exist for me. Therefore, I thought I saw it, and memory arose. This is also the worldly convention. Then, you should not have the previous experience and the subsequent memory, because they are different. If asked in this way, I, the Madhyamika, regarding the previous experience and the subsequent memory, after observation, it is not established by the reason that there was previous self-awareness and the subsequent memory arose, etc., but without observation, it is only said in the world. Because whoever previously experienced the knowledge of the object, from then on, the knowledge of the subsequent memory is not established as a different entity in me. If the entity of one's own nature and the entity of others' nature, etc., are not established as causal things, then without observation, the cause and effect of the dependent dharma cannot be established either. Without observation, the cause and effect of the worldly saying is before that. Because the world only sows the seeds, and then says that I gave birth to this son (229a). It is also thought that I planted the tree, therefore, there is no production from others in the world either. It is said like this. Gosha and many other Tibetan commentators on the Introduction say that according to the view of Master Chandrakirti, this treatise establishes that the self-awareness exists in its own system in name. And, similarly, the Alaya consciousness, self-awareness, external objects, Pudgala, etc.
