Now, please understand this meaning. In short, just as the knowable is empty of inherent existence, so too is the mind that possesses its aspect empty of inherent existence. Please understand this meaning. Because they are established in dependence on each other. In the 'Praise of the Transcendent,' it says: 'The unborn is not the knowable, without that there is no consciousness, therefore, knower and knowable, you say are empty of inherent existence.' It also says: 'Consciousness is like an illusion, spoken by the Kinsman of the Sun. Its object is also the same, definitely like the object of an illusion.' Therefore, in order to prevent oneself from falling into the abyss of slandering external objects by being seized by the demon of forgetfulness who says that consciousness is substantial, those noble ones who practice compassion should seal it with the excellent mantra of scripture and reason, and guard it with great care. Second, because there is no proof, it is unreasonable for the other-powered nature that is empty of duality to exist. Two refutations of the proof of self-awareness. First: (224b) If the other-powered nature, devoid of grasper and grasped, empty of the two, truly exists, by what will its existence be known? It is not proper to say that it exists even without being grasped. If the other-powered entity, devoid of grasper and grasped, empty of the two, is ultimately real, then by what subject will its existence be known? Having raised such a doubt, it is unreasonable for oneself to grasp oneself, because it is contradictory for oneself to act upon oneself. Just as fire does not burn itself. It is not grasped by other consciousnesses such as the previous consciousness, because it contradicts one's own tenets. If another consciousness is the object of consciousness, then it would become merely consciousness, and what was said would be lost. It is not proper to say that it exists even without being grasped by any subject, because it is too extreme. Here, in the writings of the wise and impartial ancient scholars, it is said that the Mind-Only school believes that the consciousness that is empty of the two, grasper and grasped, is self-aware, self-luminous, and perfectly established, and because it is unconditioned, it is not possessed by ordinary beings. And there are those who believe that it is conditioned and a perfectly established nature that is not inverted, so it is not ultimately real. And there are those who say that it is ultimately real, but not ultimately real truth.
