Due to the power of ignorance regarding the basis of knowledge, sentient beings in the world perceive and name the physical sense organ as the eye. The sense organs such as the eye and ear are not different from consciousness. Secondly, here, the consciousness arising from the sense organs does not depend on external objects. From its own seeds, the appearance of blue and so on arises. Because of not realizing this, beings assume and accept that external objects are what is apprehended. To show that the sense organs are not different from consciousness and that the objects are also not different from consciousness: Here, the appearance of red in Bandhuka and Kingśuka etc., is like a transforming mirror that does not depend on external colors for transformation, but naturally appears red. The consciousness arising from the sense organs such as the eye does not depend on external objects such as blue. Instead, it is connected to the power projected by its own seeds, which have been transmitted from beginningless time, and from this, the appearance of objects such as blue arises. Because of not realizing this, worldly beings think and accept that what appears in consciousness is an external object. For example, the image of a jewel hanging on a branch of a tree growing at the edge of a very clear lake appears in the water like an external jewel, but it does not actually exist. Similarly, the image of an object appears in consciousness, but it is not actually different from consciousness. Therefore, the Mind-Only school believes that all the external objects such as form spoken of by the Blessed One (216a) are provisional meanings, and the definitive meaning is that the power of the habit of clinging to form etc. matures, and just as light arises from a lamp, consciousness itself appears as the aspect of the sense objects of the external world, and the sense objects are considered as the source of arising. This is not contradictory to the establishment of the aggregates, elements, and sources. The emptiness of both inner and outer, the basis of emptiness, is also the same. Therefore, the cessation of form etc. is the cessation of the form etc. that is imputed on the external world, but not the nominal and the nature of reality form etc. Because, in the sutras, it is said that there are three forms of imputation, nominal, and nature of reality between form and omniscience. Thus, it is thought. Thirdly, in dreams, there are no other objects of form. From the maturation of one's own power, the mind appears with that aspect.

If it is like that, it is also the same when awake. If you say that there is no external object, but the mind is still present, then in the state of being awake, even without an external object, there is the consciousness of the mind. For example, in a dream, there are no other things like form, but from the maturation of the power that corresponds to oneself, the mind consciousness with the appearance of objects like form arises, just like that. Second, there are two: having harm and not having proof. First, if consciousness arises from ability, then it would follow that a blind person would also generate eye consciousness, and that the presence or absence of objects and faculties would be the same in dreams. The first is: Just as without eyes, in a dream, the mind consciousness that manifests blue and so on arises, without the eye faculty, one's own seed matures, why doesn't a blind person generate it here? Just as without eyes and form, in a dream, from the maturation of one's own imprints, the mind consciousness eye consciousness that manifests objects such as blue, and what follows, if it arises, then the subject, like that (216b), when a blind person is awake, just like a non-blind person, one's own seed matures, why doesn't the mind consciousness that holds blue with that kind of appearance arise here when awake, it should arise. Because both sleep and blindness are the same in that they do not have the eye faculty. Second, if you examine, the ability in dreams is unreasonable, if you do not examine, there are also two kinds of eyes. First, there are two kinds of unreasonableness of the nature and cause of ability. The first is: If, like you, the sixth in the dream, the ability is mature and exists, but it does not exist when awake, how can the maturity of the sixth ability not be here, why shouldn't it be reasonable to say that there is no dream time like that? Is it that the cause of the consciousness of such a blue appearance exists even without the root object of the external object? Because such consciousness arises from the maturation of ability. That is also because the condition of sleep only exists in dreams, but not when awake, if you think like this, it is unreasonable. If, like you, the sixth consciousness with such an appearance in the dream, the ability is mature and exists, but it does not exist when awake, so there will be no fault as mentioned above. Then, according to our view, it should be said like this: there is no such consciousness with appearance in the dream time, why is it not reasonable, it should be established. Because the maturity of the sixth ability is the same as when a blind person does not have it when awake.
