Secondly, if for the wisdom of the eye, its producer is simultaneous, and the feelings and so on that arise together with the eye and so on, if the other exists, then what is the need for arising when it exists? If it is said that it does not exist, then the fault has already been stated. The Dharma Abhidharma masters of the Lesser Sarvastivadins say that the co-equal, all-pervasive, and ripening causes of the six causes are not simultaneous with the result, while the co-emergent and corresponding causes are simultaneous with the result, and the efficient cause has both simultaneous and non-simultaneous aspects, and there are also those that are not included by time. Some Abhidharma masters of the Yogacara school believe that cause and effect are simultaneous, some believe that they are not simultaneous, and some believe that both are true. Although the teachings of the brothers Asanga cover all three of these, the brothers' view is mainly that cause and effect are simultaneous, considering the causal condition to be the nature of the alaya-consciousness, and that all the dharmas that leave impressions on it, and all the dharmas that arise from the alaya, are simultaneous. They believe that if cause and effect are sequential, then when the result arises, the cause has ceased, and therefore there would be the fault of arising from nothing. Therefore, the Lesser Sarvastivadins and others who believe in the simultaneity of cause and effect think that if the sprout cannot exist simultaneously, then the other cannot be established, and therefore it should not arise, but where it exists simultaneously, there the other exists, and therefore there will be arising (136a). For example, eye-consciousness and all the mental factors such as feelings that arise simultaneously and correspond to it are like mutually simultaneous cause and effect. If it is said that the things that arise together with the eye and color and feelings and so on, just as they produce eye-consciousness only simultaneously, so too the eye and so on and the mind and so on also become the cause of feelings and so on only simultaneously, then, if the wisdom of the eye, which is the result, has as its producer the eye and color and so on that are simultaneous with itself, and the feelings and so on that arise together with itself, if they are different from the eye-consciousness, then the eye-consciousness must exist, because if it does not exist, it cannot be established as something different from that. If existence is admitted, then what is the need for arising for the existence that has already been established as the result? Because it already exists. The existence that has already arisen

Because it is meaningless for generating eyes and consciousness, etc. If, because one does not wish for no arising, one says that the consciousness of the eye does not exist, then for one who speaks in this way, from the wisdom that is not existent, the fault that the eyes, etc., are not other has already been stated. Therefore, in all ways, 'arising from another'—this is merely the sound that remains, empty of the meaning of what is said. Even if there could be otherness, as in the case of simultaneity, there would be no arising. Since there is no arising, both do not exist. Even if there could be arising in the case of two like before and after, there would be no otherness. Since there is no otherness, both do not exist. The third is: If the producer produces the produced, producing another, that is the cause, then, is the produced existent or non-existent, or both, or separate from both, that is produced? If it is existent, what need is there for a producer? If it is non-existent, then what does it do? What does it do to both? What does it do to what is separate from both? From the two, cause and effect, the fruit is not existent at the time of depending on the cause (136b). That is to say, if the producer produces the produced, producing another thing from itself, that is considered the cause, then is the produced existent or non-existent, or both, or separate from both, that is produced? When it produces that, it is not permissible to produce it in a way other than that. The Samkhyas and Vaisheshikas and some Tibetans assert that the fruit is existent and arises, while the Vaisheshikas and Sutrantikas and Yogacharas assert that the non-existent arises, and the Jains and others assert that both existent and non-existent arise. Thus, the existent should not arise, because if it is existent, what need is there for a producer? Because it has already arisen, it should not arise again. The non-existent should not arise, because even if there is no produced, what does the producer do? Like a donkey's horn, because it is not a field of ability to act. In the Hundred Treatises it is said: 'Whoever asserts that the fruit is existent, and whoever asserts that the fruit is non-existent, for the sake of the house, pillars, etc., the meaning of decoration will also be non-existent.' In the Madhyamaka it is also said: 'If the nature of the fruit is existent, what does the cause produce? If the nature of the fruit is non-existent, what does the cause produce? If arising is not existent, the cause itself will not be reasonable. If the cause itself is not existent,'
