Because, destruction cannot be a cause, and the non-destructive permanence cannot be a cause either. When examined in this way, the relationship of cause and effect (191b) and its basis, etc., can be established even in name, and this absence of the mixing of elaboration is the supreme and unsurpassed tenet of this doctrine. Now, it is said that the proposition that destruction is real is contrary to reason. In general, how do the world and the masters of treatises of realism establish the destruction of things? Even in name, the reason why destruction can never be established as real. First, Tsongkhapa said, destruction is real, because both the function of destruction and non-destruction are real. If the first is not established, then destruction is real, because destruction has a cause. If it is not established, then it is established that whatever does not stay in the second moment has a cause, and if so, it is the same that not staying in the second moment also has a cause. It is also said that the help of the cause of the sprout arising in the first moment causes the fruit of destruction to arise in the second moment. It is also said that although the destruction of the sprout cannot now be caused by the cause, the destruction itself is the cause, so there is a cause. It is also said that the destruction of the seed is real, because the exhaustion of the seed is real. It is established, because the arising of the sprout and the exhaustion of the seed are simultaneous. If it is not established, then the side of the sprout arising and the side of the seed exhausting are not simultaneous, because the sprout arising and the seed exhausting are not simultaneous. Therefore, the sprout is not present at the time of the seed (192a), but later it is present, so it is established as having a cause, similarly, the destruction of the sprout, the destruction of the sprout before, was not present at the time of the sprout before, but later it was present, so it is established as having a cause. Also, in the Tenth Ground Sutra, it is said: Old age and death are caused by birth, so death is the destruction of the sentient being that died, and it is said that it is caused by the cause of birth. Also, in the same sutra, it is said: Death also has two functions, namely, it can destroy actions and also produce the cause of ignorance. Thus, death has two functions, namely, as the cause of death, death can produce ignorance. Therefore, destruction has the cause of arising and des

is able to produce fruit. Therefore, existence and non-existence are conditioned phenomena. As it is said: From the exhaustion of the cause comes quiescence, exhaustion is the object of focus. Thus, the actual things like sprouts, and the non-existence of their destruction, both are conditioned phenomena. The exhaustion of causes like oil is said to be the cause of the exhaustion of effects like lamps. So it is said. All the reasoning that establishes it is only self-defeating, and all the scriptures are only irrelevant. First, in establishing that destruction is a real thing, after making two replies to the proof, if it is said that if there is a cause for not staying in the second moment, then there is also a cause for not staying in the second moment, because it is the same. If sameness is established, if the thing produced by the cause is a thing, then the thing that has been produced by the cause and (192b) has ceased must also be a thing, so how do you prevent it? Also, the sprout arises in the first moment because the cause has helped it, and the sprout decays in the second moment. If it is possible to produce a real result, then for the same reason, the sprout in the later second moment will also be helped by the decay of the sprout in the first moment. If this is admitted, then because of this admission, the arising of the sprout is the cause of the decay of the sprout, and the decay of the sprout is also the cause of the arising of the sprout. If admitted, arising is the cause of ceasing, ceasing is the cause of arising, death is the cause of immortality, immortality is the cause of death, living is the cause of non-living, and non-living is the cause of living. If this is admitted, then the cause of immortality and living, the nectar of the gods and the accomplishment of the deathless life-sustaining awareness holder, will also become the cause of death and non-living. Moreover, the arising and decaying of sprouts, according to your view, should not be established as cause and effect in earlier and later times, because the decay of the sprout is a thing, and the arising of the sprout is also a thing, because it has become a thing that is not separated by other things of the same or different kind. If it is not established, then the two are not established as real cause and effect, because there is another separation between the two cause and effect. If you think that the root is not pervasive, if it is not necessary for things to be separated in order to establish earlier and later times, then the dharmas of space, etc.
