It is meaningless to speculate on the location, because such a thing is not established even in conventional truth. As it says in the root text: "If it remains until the time of ripening, then the action becomes permanent. If it ceases, then because it has ceased, how will it produce fruit?" As it says, does the action remain until the time of complete ripening, or does it not remain because it ceases immediately after arising? Wherever it is said, it must be said that the thing is either permanent or impermanent. When questioned in this way, the non-Buddhists who accept karmic results believe that because there is a permanent self of the person who experiences the results of actions, karmic results, heavens, and liberation are reasonable. But according to the Buddhists, since there is no self of the person and the aggregates are momentary, karmic results, heavens, and liberation are not possible. Because there would be a confusion of karmic results, such as encountering actions not done, wasting actions already done, and others accumulating and others experiencing. The Shakya school, which speaks of momentary aggregates, if there is no self, then the efforts needed for heavens and liberation would be meaningless. They say this. This is not reasonable, because the permanent self, which is the basis of karmic results, is harmed by the reasoning of future refutation. If the permanent self experiences karmic results, then either all karmic results are experienced simultaneously, or they are never experienced. Because the permanent self experiencing maturation does not depend on conditions. Moreover, it is contradictory that the same permanent entity becomes various things such as happiness and suffering, bad destinies and heavens, and liberation. If there is a self, then self-grasping cannot be abandoned, and because all afflictions arise from self-grasping, liberation is not reasonable, and so on, countless faults arise. These Dharma schools do not accept a permanent self and actions, because they have fallen into the faults mentioned above. In response to this, the Sthaviras and their successors, considering that even if it is not permanent, the faults raised by the non-Buddhists would arise, they accept a person as the basis of karmic results, which cannot be said to be the same as the aggregates or different from the aggregates, and cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent. This is also not reasonable, because it is harmed by the reasoning of future refutation. Moreover, at the time of complete nirvana, if there is a self, then it should be possible to say that it is different from the aggregates, because the aggregates

Also, because I am not destroyed, therefore it also constantly changes. If there is no self, when the aggregates are destroyed, I am also destroyed, so it becomes impermanent, and therefore at that time it can be spoken of. In the Pramāṇavārttika it says: "That which cannot be said to be impermanent, that is not the cause of anything, for that which cannot be spoken of, bondage and liberation, in no way exist." As such, if even in name it cannot be said to be impermanent, then it cannot be a cause, because bondage and liberation are also unreasonable. Those who are different from this, those who speak of entities, although they admit that the basis of karma and karmic results is impermanent, but in order to answer the debate of how the fruit arises from the karma that has already ceased, they say: Even if those are impermanent, but until the fruit is not ripe, the moments (185n) one after another, because the continuity of the latter arising from the former is not interrupted, the relationship of karma and fruit is reasonable. Because the former is destroyed, it is not permanent, and because the latter arises, there is no annihilation, and because the former and latter continuity is one, there is no fault of encountering what has not been done, etc. Among them, some who are learned, although they admit that the basis of karmic results is the person and sentient being who are one in nature with the aggregates, but that is unreasonable, because it is harmed by the teachings and reasoning that will be explained, and if the self exists, it contradicts the four seals of Dharma, and because liberation cannot be attained, it cannot be the teaching of the teacher. It is unreasonable for the former and these two to admit that the person is substantially existent. Then, do those of our own school who admit the self, is their teaching the teaching of the teacher? If that is not the case, then those schools themselves are unreasonable, and those schools are also said to be the teachers of the Sarvāstivāda and Sautrāntika schools of the Lesser Vehicle. Redawa said: All those who speak of the self are considered to be outside the teachings of the Buddha, because the teachings of the Buddha are distinguished by teaching non-self. Therefore, those who speak of the self are not the proponents of the teacher's tenets. Then, how are all those schools included in the teachings of the Tathāgata? The teachings of the Tathāgata are distinguished by pure discipline and pure view, therefore all eighteen schools
