That is truly established. The second case is impossible because such a thing does not exist in what is knowable. If it is the first case, then you will never become a Madhyamika proponent who claims that all dharmas lack the nature of things. Because the nature of the pot itself is a thing characterized by the function of holding water, having a shrunken base, and a bulging belly, and it is not empty of its own nature. When we enter this Madhyamika school that speaks of no self-nature, how wonderful it would be if the sound of saying that the Madhyamikas who speak of no self-nature think like this were not heard in the ears of anyone, self or other, in all lives! If it is spread like this, it will hinder the generation of supreme realization and will be stained with the great sin of refuting the definitive scriptures of the Bhagavan. Because the Bhagavan emphatically taught in a definitive way that a pot is empty of a pot, and not that a pot is empty by a dharma other than a pot, which does not mean that the pot is empty. But you have said the opposite of that. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it says: "Form is not empty by the emptiness of form, but form itself is emptiness." And so on, which are contradictory. If pots and so on are not empty by themselves, then it can be established that a pot is empty in terms of a pot. If you admit that, then the pot can be found when analyzed by reason. (174a) If you admit that, you must admit that each individual atom or collection of atoms of the pot is the pot. In that case, the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas do not admit that coarse things such as pots can withstand rational analysis, so how could the Madhyamikas admit it? Individual atoms cannot be pots, because the smallest atoms can never be established as coarse things. Some, such as Vasubandhu, say that the consciousness that arises from other causes and conditions and is not established by its own nature is admitted as the ultimate truth, so external objects are all apprehended by conceptualization, as well as the nature of things and the distinctions of grasping, and the perfectly established characteristic of being empty of the mind and mental factors of grasping is that moment of consciousness that is the ultimate truth, as well as cause and effect, oneness and otherness, and so on, and like impermanence, it cannot be said to be the same or different. Other-powered appearances, from form to omniscience,

All phenomena of imaging are empty, empty of the apprehended and the apprehender, the completely imputed. The nature of other-powered is not emptiness from the beginning. To assert this way is not to have liberation. The Four Hundred says: "Not empty, not with emptiness, not seeing nirvana, may I become the owner. Those with wrong views do not transcend sorrow, thus have the Tathagatas spoken." And, the treatise says: "All views of emptiness, the Victorious Ones have said to abandon. Whoever sees emptiness as a view, (174b) they achieve nothing." Because it appears thus. The meaning of the second scripture is easy to understand. The meaning of the first scripture is that for something that does not exist even in name, like the non-existent horns of a rabbit, the cessation of any element of imputation by conceptual thought, such as external objects, cannot be established as emptiness. Because emptiness is a relative phenomenon, like a dependent phenomenon that appears as non-empty, it is through distinguishing it with a dependent arising phenomenon that is not established as such that emptiness is to be understood in the world, and thus it is established. For example, the face of an image is merely an appearance, the face is empty of its own nature, so it is said of the image that the nature of the face is emptiness, like this it is seen. If it is not like that, then for things that are permanent and things that are annihilated, because they lack correct wisdom, they will not understand emptiness as a phenomenon called emptiness. Therefore, such annihilation emptiness does not possess any thing. Therefore, to say that the object of consciousness is the emptiness that is empty of the completely imputed, and that it is not the same as or different from it, but exists there, is not established. If it were established in that way, then for a golden vase, to say that the emptiness that is empty of a rabbit's horn vase, like the impermanence of the making of a golden vase, cannot be said to be the same as or different from it, but exists there, would also be reasonable. These who speak of things as real say that whatever exists as a thing is not empty of its own nature. Whatever does not exist as a thing, for knowable things, is fundamentally annihilated, a thing whose nature is not established, (175a) to speak of it as the meaning of emptiness. Then, for those who assert that things are permanent and that things are annihilated, their minds have not turned even slightly towards the profound nature of emptiness. Whatever is real and unreal, in reality is real and
