Translation: For this reason, the sutra says: All formations are conditioned by ignorance; those formations are not inherently existent; these two, formations and ignorance, are empty; by their very nature, they are free from movement. Also, the treatise says: Whatever arises in dependence on something, that is not exactly that thing for the time being; it is neither different from it nor other than it; therefore, it is neither permanent nor discontinuous. Aryadeva says: Because things change and transform, therefore they are not discontinuous; because things revert and perish, therefore they are not permanent. Secondly, if one's own characteristic depends on change, then by denying that, things are destroyed. If emptiness becomes the cause of the destruction of things, then that is not reasonable; therefore, there is no real existence. Therefore, it must be undoubtedly admitted that no thing arises by its own characteristic. If it is not like that, if all the dharmas from form up to omniscient wisdom are not merely conceptually imputed, but arise or are produced by their own characteristic, that is, by relying on the cause and condition of their own essence, then emptiness, by saying that the nature of things exists and becomes non-existent, would become the cause of the destruction of things. When yogis see emptiness, because they deny that things arise by their own characteristics, they cause things to be destroyed, just like destroying a vase with a hammer (172b). If that is the assertion, then it is not reasonable, because things do not have the nature of arising by their own essence and characteristics. As it says in the Ratnakuta Sutra: "O Kashyapa, furthermore, the right and individual discernment of the dharmas of the Middle Way does not make the dharmas empty by emptiness itself; rather, the dharmas themselves are empty. That which is without signs does not make the dharmas without signs; rather, the dharmas themselves are without signs. That which is without aspirations does not make the dharmas without aspirations; rather, the dharmas themselves are without aspirations. That which is without manifestation of activity does not make the dharmas without manifestation of activity; rather, the dharmas themselves are without manifestation of activity. That which is unborn by the unborn dharmas does not make them unborn; rather, the dharmas themselves are unborn. That which is unarisen does not make the dharmas unarisen.

That (referring to the scripture). "All dharmas are unproduced," etc., are widely proclaimed. Here, in the great tradition of Madhyamaka of Tsongkhapa, regarding the emptiness of all dharmas being empty of their own nature, saying that a pot is not empty by the pot, but the pot is empty by truth, and the pot is the meaning of being empty of itself, this is actually acknowledging the prior position that is refuted by the root and commentaries of this treatise (referring to the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā) and other Madhyamaka scriptures. How is it acknowledged? Because this school well prevents the temporary emptiness from being able to fulfill the role of profound emptiness, and well shows the nature of pervasive emptiness. But you say the opposite in this school. Therefore, preventing this (173a) from speaking of temporary emptiness as the nature of emptiness, for example, the Cittamatrins say that on the dependent nature of consciousness, there is emptiness of the emptiness of the apprehended and the apprehender, but they believe that the dependent nature of consciousness is not empty of its own nature. That kind of emptiness that you believe is not the ultimate emptiness that pervades all dharmas, because in the two truths there remains a dharma that is not empty in the ultimate truth, so it is said to be temporary emptiness, which is to shift the fault to those who assert reality. If according to the view of the Madhyamaka school that you believe, then shifting the fault to the Cittamatrins and other assertors of reality will turn back on oneself. Like this, when you Madhyamikas speak of the nature of emptiness, you claim to acknowledge the emptiness that pervades all dharmas. Saying this is unreasonable, because the pot is a dharma, so what? It is not empty of its own nature, but remains. Although the pot is empty of the temporary emptiness of being truly established by the way it exists, it has not been established that all dharmas are emptiness, if you say so, then wouldn't that Madhyamika who speaks according to your school not be unwilling to answer any of the assertions, clarity, and pervasiveness? According to your view, is the pot empty of its own nature or not empty of its own nature? It cannot be explained as not being, because your way of explaining Madhyamaka is being acknowledged as the Madhyamaka of the assertion of no self-nature. If so, then is the nature of the pot the characteristic (173b) of the object that has the function of holding water, the bottom shrinking, and the belly bulging? Or is it established by the way it exists?
