When you are discerning, the world does not cause harm. The reason is that when discerning, the world is not a valid measure in any case, therefore, just as the view of illusion does not harm the view of non-illusion. The third is: The meaning of the world is only what the world commonly calls, if that is removed, the world will cause harm. So where does the harm of the world apply? If the world's common term itself removes the meaning commonly called by the world, then for that reason, the world will cause harm. For example, someone says, "My things were robbed." Another person asks, "What things?" That person replies, "It's a vase." Another person says, "A vase is not a thing, because it is measurable, like a vase in a dream." (171a) Like this kind of refutation, the world will cause harm. Because the world thinks that the vase in the waking state is real, and does not think that the vase in the dream is real, so the example and the meaning do not match, and does not accept detailed rational analysis. When abiding in the view of the noble ones, and taking the wise as the measure, the world will not cause harm. The wise can extrapolate this method to other things in this way. For example, if someone says, "Whoever does not see his own essence will not see other things, just like a vase, the eye cannot see itself." Another person retorted, "The eye can see other things, this is the common term of the world." And so on, for all cases where common terms are used as a measure, common terms do not harm the view of the noble ones. The second is: Why do people only sow seeds, and say, "I gave birth to this son," and also think, "I have planted a tree," therefore, there is no other birth even in the world. Even if following the world's view to make a subsequent statement, the world will not harm the negation of "other birth." Don't just see that things are produced from elsewhere, even in the world, there is no situation where they are produced from elsewhere. Because people in the world only sow seeds in the mother's womb, and later give birth to a child with male characteristics, they will say, "I gave birth to this son." Only planting the seeds of a mango, and later growing into a big tree, they will also think, "I planted this too."

It is understood that one does not view seeds and fruits as different substances. Apart from that, one's own child is born from one's own body and placed in the womb, and when planting a tree, one does not plant a tree with lush branches (171b). Therefore, in the world, cause and effect will not become one. Just like the previous reason, one would say "my child" and "I planted the tree." If it were not like that, but others produced others, there would be no occasion to show close relationships such as "my child." Secondly, it shows the merit of dependent origination being established without permanence or annihilation, and it shows the fault of becoming a slander of emptiness if it is established by its own nature. The first is: Because the sprout is not other than the seed, therefore, when the sprout arises, the seed does not perish. Because it is not a single existence, therefore, when the sprout arises, one should not say that the seed exists. Here, if the seed and sprout become other entities, then when the sprout arises, the seed will be cut off, because it is other. Just as there is a calf, even if the cow dies, the calf will not be cut off, just as there is a living being, the noble one will not fail to enter nirvana. Therefore, when the sprout arises, the seed does not perish or cease, because the sprout is not other than the seed, therefore, in this way, annihilation is abandoned. One should not say that the seed exists when the sprout arises, because the seed and sprout are not a single existence. In this way, permanence is completely abandoned. As it is said in the scriptures: If the seed exists, the sprout will arise accordingly. What the seed is, is not the nature of the sprout. It is not produced from something other than it, nor is it itself, so it is neither permanent nor the nature of cessation. Therefore, the seed and sprout are not other entities, because if there is a seed, a sprout will arise, and what the seed is will not become a sprout, because there is no possibility of it being itself, being other, or being both. Because the two are not one and different. The seed and sprout arise and cease in dependence, and are free from the permanence of constantly occurring and the cessation of never occurring (172a). Therefore, if seeds and sprouts had their own nature, there would be no other way than the nature of being one and different, but because they do not have these natures, the absence of nature itself makes the relationship between seeds and sprouts merely imputed. Like the seeds and sprouts in a dream, how could they be one and other?
