It will transform. Those various tenets from Vaibhashika to Prasangika Madhyamaka and the definitions of the two truths of each doctrine, establishing endless differences in one's own system (151b), is because they do not understand the key points of reasoning and do not distinguish between definition and definiendum. The higher and lower tenets are inconsistent in the definiendum of the two truths, because the definiendum that the lower and lower tenets assume to be ultimate is refuted by the reasoning of the higher and higher tenets. There is no inconsistency merely in naming them as definition and designatum "ultimate truth" and "conventional truth." If there is inconsistency, then it would be impossible to establish or refute whether the definiendum is or is not through the common definition. Therefore, in the views of all the higher and lower tenets, whatever is not harmed by reasoning and can withstand examination is the ultimate truth, and the opposite is the conventional truth; that which does not deceive its own nature and exists in reality is the ultimate truth, and the opposite is the conventional truth; the object of a non-erroneous subject is the ultimate truth, and the object of error is the conventional truth. All tenets agree on this. The definiendum is: the ultimate truth of the realists is considered to exist after rational examination, as it says in the Compendium of Determinations: "Should it be said that suchness is consequent, or should it be said that it is imputed existence? It is said that it should be said that it is consequent, because it is included by the ultimate truth." Like this. The Madhyamikas refute it, saying that if such an ultimately existent substantial entity exists, there will be no Buddha, and even if there is a Buddha, there will be no such entity, because if there is even a slight existence of phenomena as a substance that can be established by rational examination, then the three: ground, path, and result, (152a) dharma and non-dharma together with their fruits, and all the terms of samsara and nirvana will be impossible, because it is never reasonable for self-nature to change. Moreover, the definiendum of the ultimate truth of the realists will also be transformed into the conventional truth here, as it says in the texts of the Svatantrika school: "What others consider to be alcohol, this one considers to be my wife." So, is there an uncommon definition and designatum of the two truths of the Prasangika Madhyamaka school that can be established? It does not exist, because the outer

In order to dispel the confusion in the minds of the debaters who assert the tenets of treatises from the Vaibhashikas and Svatantrika Madhyamikas onwards, for those who hold that ultimate reality, the nature of substance, is truly established, showing the definitive harm that the characteristic of ultimate truth, which they also accept, does not enter into that basis, thereby refuting the opponent's wrong conceptions. When the Prasangika Madhyamikas make distinctions of what to accept and reject based on their own conventional reality, they do not apply terms by associating a characteristic and its referent that are established by their own system, but rather they engage in acceptance and rejection in accordance with the conventional terms of correct and incorrect that are in accordance with the unexamined world. Thus, even if it is merely a designation in one's own system, if even the basis of ultimate truth is not established upon examination, then its characteristic cannot be found. At that time, even if only a name remains as the designatum fashioned as represented by that characteristic, that name is also empty of its own essence, so the nature of (152b) ultimate reality, emptiness, is even more transcendent than the realm of the wisdom of the noble ones. How could anyone find the nature of the characteristic in this? Considering this meaning, in the definitive meaning scriptures of sutra and tantra, it says, "All is the nature of space, and space also lacks a nature." Therefore, if one understands such a key point, some may have the unfounded doubt that ultimate truth is a non-affirming negation, whether it can withstand analysis or not. If it cannot withstand analysis, then emptiness becomes a non-affirming non-negation. If it can withstand analysis, then emptiness becomes a non-affirming true establishment. All such doubts will disappear like a snake knot unraveling in the sky, said the great perfect Buddha, Nyenpa Rinchen. So, for the characteristic of ultimate truth, is there a dharma that is not harmed by reason and can withstand analysis, that abides in reality without deceiving its own essence, and that has become an object of an unerring consciousness, existing or not existing in reality? If you say it exists, then you become proponents of inherent existence. If it does not exist, then the distinction of whether or not to establish something as ultimately meaningful based on whether or not the characteristic has such a meaning becomes meaningless. To this, we Prasangikas do not assert that an ultimate truth possessing that characteristic exists in reality, but rather the characteristic that is the opposite of that.
