Because there is no birth, etc. It is impossible to have no birth, etc. As it says, this school admits that emptiness is inexpressible. If it does not admit this, then who with a mind would call this school Madhyamaka? Therefore, the Svatantrika admits the three distinctions of valid cognition as the basis of refutation and establishment, and if these are gathered together here and analyzed, it is easy to understand, so it is said in this way. But this is not to say that all Svatantrikas unanimously admit all three distinctions of valid cognition. Because they do not have deep distinctions of their own. Because some seem to admit all three distinctions, some admit two, and some admit only one. Those who consider themselves followers of the early Prasangikas, in accordance with this statement, also do not have deep distinctions, so some do not admit all three distinctions of valid cognition, some do not admit two, and some do not admit one, and various situations arise. In general, it is unreasonable for the Prasangikas not to admit that valid cognition, which is the basis of refutation and establishment for the sake of taming beings, exists at any time, and therefore not to express it there. Because in the Clear Words, it has been promised to elaborate on the four valid cognitions that serve as the basis of refutation and establishment, and they have been widely explained in the Root Wisdom and Entering the Middle Way, etc., thereby refuting all internal and external heretics. In particular, although it is not considered that things are accomplished by the power of things in both truths, when refuting and establishing, it is like all things in the world and scriptures are said to engage in the function of the power of things. After following what others have admitted, they widely refute others through the power of things. For example, for the Samkhyas, if it exists, then arising from the self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城体:ātman,梵文罗马拟音:ātman,汉语字面意思:我) would also be meaningless, because the innate wisdom of worldly people considers the power of things to be effective, so in order to explain this, it is written in the Clear Words in this way, thereby refuting arising from the self. Like this, the Prasangikas endlessly express the reasoning based on the power of things that others have spoken, in order to harm others. Furthermore, the Prasangikas argue for the sake of their own vows.

Although it is not admitted that the object to be proven and the means of proving exist in reality, for the sake of other beings to be tamed, in accordance with the common agreement of others, the three characteristics of the object to be proven and the means of proving in one's own words, which are of the Svātantrika school, are widely expounded by the teachers Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti. For example, in the Clear Words commentary on the thirteenth chapter, it says: "Because its nature is not, all conditioned phenomena are false, because they are deceptive, like the water of a mirage. Whatever is true is not deceptive, for example, nirvāṇa." This is because it is a Svātantrika syllogism. So, how is it established in the Svātantrika way? It is by taking all conditioned phenomena as the subject, taking falsity as the property to be proven, and taking deceptiveness as the property of the homogeneous class. And the phrase "because its nature is not" means that the reason itself is not unestablished. The part about the mirage is an example of the established pervasion of subsequent concomitance. And the phrase "whatever is true is not deceptive" shows the counter-pervasion. For example, the phrase "like nirvāṇa" shows the basis of the counter-pervasion. Furthermore, the Prāsaṅgika also establishes the three characteristics of the Svātantrika in front of others, because if they did not establish them, the Prāsaṅgika would not be able to generate an inference that is accepted by others in front of others. So, how is it established? In the Clear Words, it says: "The knowledge that arises from not being confused about the object to be proven, which is characterized by a hidden object (79a), is inference." Among these, "the appearing sign" shows the property of the subject. The phrase "not being confused about the object to be proven" also acknowledges the pervasion of subsequent and reverse concomitance, and thus declares that inference is a valid cognition. These are not the three characteristics of the Svātantrika, but the three characteristics that are accepted by others. Therefore, they are acknowledged and stated here, thereby causing the beings to be tamed to generate the inference that it is a valid cognition. If someone thinks that it does not matter whether others accept such three characteristics or not, if the opponent himself states such three characteristics there, thereby causing other opponents to generate the inference that it is a valid cognition, then these three characteristics are the statement in the opponent's own continuum, and not because they are not stated in the continuum of others.
