Explanation of the Absence of Self in Phenomena. Explanation of the Absence of Self in Phenomena. Firstly, there are two aspects: scriptural authority and reasoning. The first is scriptural authority. Regarding how to accurately reveal the true nature of all phenomena, here, first, is scriptural authority. In the 'Noble Ten Bhumi Sutra,' it says: 'Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, the Bodhisattva who has perfected the path on the fifth Bodhisattva Bhumi enters the sixth Bodhisattva Bhumi. He enters through ten equalities of phenomena. What are the ten? They are: all phenomena are equal in being without characteristics; all phenomena are equal in being without essence; similarly, unborn, unarisen, secluded, primordially pure, without elaboration, without acceptance or rejection, are equal; all phenomena are equal as illusion, dream, mirage, gandharva city, moon in water, reflection, and emanation; all phenomena are equal in being non-dual in entity and non-entity. When one thoroughly realizes the nature of all phenomena in this way, one attains the sixth Bodhisattva Bhumi with sharp and compliant forbearance.' And so on. Here, there is a reason for first explaining the absence of self in phenomena: because the Bodhisattva on the sixth Bhumi arises from seeing the suchness of dependent origination; and because it is for those who delight in virtue to hear this path, this is from the perspective of the noble ones; if one realizes the suchness of all phenomena, then the basis of confusion for the self-clinging to a person will also be realized as without inherent existence, thereby abandoning the two obscurations, therefore it is mainly explained. So, if merely explaining the absence of self in phenomena accomplishes the purpose, is explaining the absence of self in a person meaningless? No, because for those of dull faculties, it is for them to gradually enter the Dharma; and it is to reveal the entrance to liberation for the individuals of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The second part is: extensively refuting the four extremes of arising, explaining the conventional arising as dependent origination, and explaining the necessity of analyzing with reasoning. The first part is: directly refuting the four extremes of arising, and eliminating contradictions in the refutation. The first part is: restating the pledge of non-arising, and extensively explaining the reasoning for refuting the four extremes of arising, and that.

It is to explain that all dharmas are without self-nature. First, how can it arise from itself, and how can it arise from others? Since it does not arise from both, how can it exist without a cause? Among the ten teachings of equality, the first eight explain equality in the ultimate sense, the ninth explains equality in the conventional sense with seven metaphors such as illusion, and the last one explains that both truths are equal, thus explaining the equality of non-arising through reasoning. Since other equalities are easy to explain, the teacher says at the beginning of the "Madhyamaka Karika": Not from self, not from other, not from both, nor from no cause. Whatever things, wherever they are, there is never any arising. The meaning of this passage is: Whatever internal and external things depend on themselves, no matter what the place, time, or sect of dependence, there will never be arising, that is, there will be none in any case. Similarly, it also applies to the other three cases. Saying "not" is connected with "not from self", etc., but not with "existence of self-arising", because the negation of the cause naturally establishes the negation of the effect. This treatise, the teacher Shantarakshita and others, combine the reasoning of Vajraśekhara to explain. In the "Madhyamakaloka", it says: Like this, those who are ultimately free from arising from self, arising from other, arising from both, and arising from no cause, they are truly without essence, like the lotus in the sky and so on. All things that are said to exist truly by self and other are also the same as that. Therefore, in order to destroy all the differences of things spoken by self and other, the great free ones have thoroughly proclaimed these four unobstructed Vajraśekharas, therefore all these paths do not contradict each other. This treatise is combined in this way. The teacher Suredra and others combine the refutation of arising with the four promises of Svatantrika, and supplement it from the aspects of reasoning and examples. However, the commentator Buddhapalita and the two commentators here, combine the four-sentence inference of refuting the four extremes of arising with the four promises, and supplement it from the aspect of reason.
