Just like a sprout, whatever seed it is, it is not the sprout itself. It is not different from it, nor is it itself. Like this, it is not permanent, not annihilated, it is the nature of phenomena. Thus it is said. From this very root: Whatever arises in dependence on what, that is temporarily not that itself. Because it is not different from it, therefore it is not annihilated, not permanent. Thus it is explained. When worldly people conventionally rely on conventional arising and so forth to engage in worldly terminology, when Madhyamikas, in accordance with the world, follow their speech and make worldly terminology, because they do not prevent mere arising in their view, how could worldly people believe in self-origination in the conventional? How could Madhyamikas ever speak of self-origination in the conventional? Therefore, adding the word "ultimate" to what is to be refuted is irrelevant. Second, if it is said that the distinction of "ultimate" is made in relation to the view of other Samkhyas who believe in self-origination in the ultimate, that is also unreasonable. Because Madhyamikas do not even accept those establishments of the Samkhyas as merely conventional. Chandrakirti realized that the tenets of the non-Buddhists, since they have fallen from seeing the two truths without error, are meritorious to the extent that they prevent self-origination from the perspective of both truths. Therefore, it is also unreasonable to speak of the distinction of "ultimate" in relation to the views of other schools. Third, if it is said that the world, being independent, believes in self-origination in its mind, so it does not prevent it, therefore the word "ultimate" is added, then even the worldly people who say that the distinction together with the result arises in dependence on whatever cause, do not understand self-origination. Because worldly people do not engage in analyzing such distinctions as self-origination and other-origination, but only understand that the result arises from the cause. Therefore, the teacher also does not analyze from which of the two truths arising and so forth occur, but when engaging in worldly conventional terminology, he establishes the unanalyzed conventional in that way. Therefore, in all ways, it is certain that the distinction "ultimate" is meaningless. Adding the word "ultimate" to the distinction of the subject...

If saying so is also unreasonable, then it shows: Furthermore, if one wants to negate arising from self even in conventional truth, and thereby establishes "truly existent internal sense bases" as the subject (chos can)—taking "truly existent" as a distinction of the subject (117b), then at that time, for the skillful one himself, it will become the fault of the basis not being established, or the fault of the reason of the basis not being established. Because the skillful one himself does not accept the truly existent eye and other sense bases. To avoid this fault, if one says that because eye and others exist in conventional truth, there is no fault of the basis not being established, then, if the term "truly existent" is not understood as a distinction of the subject, then, when asked "of what is the term 'truly existent' a distinction?" the answer is, if the conventional truths of eye and others are the subject, and because it prevents them from arising truly, therefore saying "truly existent" is a distinction of preventing arising, then, the answer is, if that is the case, then it is not appropriate to establish the argument in that way as before. If it is reasonable to say "the conventional truths of eye and others are not truly existent arising," then, since you, the skillful one, have not said that, the fault of the previous argument has not been avoided. Even if one says that the conventional eye and others are the subject, the Samkhyas and other proponents of realism accept that the eye and others are substances, that they are truly existent, and do not accept that they are nominally existent as conventional truths, so for the Samkhyas and other schools, it will become the fault of the basis not being established as the subject, so this is unreasonable. Therefore, if one makes the eye and others the subject as truly existent, then it is not established for oneself; if one makes the conventional eye and others the subject, then it is not established for others, so one cannot avoid the fault of the subject (118a). When saying this, neither the distinction of truly existent nor conventionally existent should be taken as the subject. If one wants to grasp only the general characteristic that abandons that distinction, for example, just as in the statement "sound is impermanent," only the general characteristic "sound" of both the impermanent dharma and the subject sound is grasped, and not the distinction. If one grasps the distinction, then all the terms of the sign (rtags) of inference (rjes su dpag pa) and the probandum (bsgrub bya) to be established by inference will disappear, thus briefly explaining.
