If the great teacher Lekden, the All-Knowing One, does not say so even in a dream, then what is the need to make such a huge unfounded slander by saying "He said so"? Isn't it shameful to slander the Noble Ones? Therefore, if worldly conventional phenomena exist in their own right, then, in the blazing fire of reasoning, conventional designation (99b) is only a thing. As the Sugata said: The three realms are only a designation, they do not exist as the nature of things. On the designation, as real things, the evil conceptualizers conceptualize. How is this to be explained? If things are established by their own characteristics, then does the basis (subject) need to be established by the nature of the characteristic? If not, then things will not be established as their own characteristics from the self-nature of the object. If so, then there, as it is said: Birth, etc., by their very nature as conditioned, the characteristic is not the basis. Because it is conditioned and because it is to be known, like that which is other than it. This means that birth, etc., are the characteristics of the conditioned, so they should not be the characteristics of the basis of the aggregates, etc., because they are conditioned, and because they are to be known, like the basis other than the characteristics of birth, etc. One should think like this. And, there, whatever is the nature of things is only existence, because there is a characteristic. But for things that do not exist, such as the son of a barren woman, there is no characteristic either, so that is not established either. Because all things have characteristics, it is not admitted that there is a self-nature. It says there: Because all things have characteristics, it is not admitted that there is a self-nature. Moreover, if the Svatantrika school admits that it is established by its own characteristics, then there will be a contradiction within the Svatantrika school, so it does not admit it that way. It says there: Therefore, it is not established as the ultimate truth, and it also becomes contradictory in meaning. This means that because the selflessness of things (100a) has been shown before, therefore, the opponent's reason "because it has characteristics" is not established for the Madhyamika, because all phenomena are without characteristics. The meaning of that reason will also become contradictory, because when establishing things that are selfless, such as earth, etc., it is not seen that they have characteristics. Thus. Therefore,

If things are established by their own characteristics, it must be admitted that the inherent nature of the earth, the place of solidity, is established by its own continuum. Because that is also negated. Regarding this, the verse says: Earth is not the nature of earth, so it cannot represent hardness, because it is the cause of the body's consciousness, just as fire cannot be shown by fire. This is to negate oneness, the nature of earth cannot represent the hardness of earth itself, because it is the cause of the arising of the body's consciousness. For example, the nature of fire cannot be represented as hardness by the nature of fire itself. Also, although it is thought that the characteristic is different from the characterized, it is not established there. Regarding this, the verse says: The nature of a cow is not the body of a cow, one does not desire dewlap and skin folds, because it is a mind with distinctions, like the nature of a donkey. After negating in this way, in order to briefly explain that one should not mistakenly believe that things are established by their own characteristics, but that the meaning of establishment established by valid cognition is negated, regarding this, the verse says: If it is one, how can it be a characteristic? Because it does not represent that nature. If it is different, how can it be a characteristic? Because the other does not represent the other nature. This is said. In accordance with this, the Prajñāpradīpa (ཤེས་རབ་སྒྲོན་, 100b) also says: The own-being of things, conditions and so on are not existent. And so on. The 'of things' refers to the eyes and so on. 'Own-being' refers to one's own essence. 'Conditions and so on' refers to semen and blood and so on. The word 'and so on' includes aggregates and independence and other things. 'Not existent' is a negation. Because it does not exist, whose conditions will those conditions become? For the object of the conventional eye, its own-being, that is, its own essence or its own characteristic and its own emptiness are not established, and the power of other conditions and so on are also not established. Such clear and easy to understand, excellent teachings that are easy to grasp when listened to, if one abandons such teachings, no matter how one searches according to the tenets of the Svātantrika school, one will not find things that are established by their own characteristics from the way of abiding of objects in the conventional. If one thinks in this way, then what result does one hope to obtain? In particular, when the great Svātantrika master Śāntarakṣita examines the ultimate truth,
