When the two of them argued, "It is a son," there was a wandering ascetic nearby. They went to him, prostrated, and stated their respective thoughts. He (the wandering ascetic) said to one of them, "What you say is true." To the other, he said, "It is not true." To this, the wandering ascetic said, "How could it be? Here, there is neither a great powerful one nor a son of the desireless. These are paintings drawn on the wall." Although he knew this, due to worldly convention, he said, "This is true, this is not true." Saying this does not constitute the fault of lying. Similarly, although the Bhagavan sees all phenomena as empty of inherent existence, due to worldly convention, he said, "This is the truth, this is not the truth, this is both truth and not truth." Ultimately, "Neither true nor not true, this is the teaching of the Buddha." How can one say that phenomena that are empty of inherent existence, such as illusions, dreams, mirages, reflections, and echoes, are true or not true? Therefore, this is the teaching of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, free from the faults of existence and non-existence, not shared by all non-Buddhists, and clarifying the ultimate truth. Thus it is said. Therefore, my father, the venerable Jetsun Repa, said, "In the conventional, although the conventional cause and effect of karma, established by conventional valid cognition, does not exist, one should know that it appears as if it exists, and it can be established as a term dependent on it. However, just that existence does not prove that it is truly existent in both truths. If it could prove, then the extreme of the elaboration of existence would become the non-elaboration extreme." These words he spoke are the perfect nourishing nectar for those who desire to attain the state of deathlessness free from elaboration (92a). If one thinks well, this is how I understand it: When the Lord Nagarjuna, in his root text, refutes self-generation, his direct disciples Buddhapalita and Bhavaviveka, because they refute conventional phenomena etc. with conventional valid cognition, whether or not it is necessary to establish a proven tenet for both opponents, their respective systems diverged, but later

When the great scholar Chandrakirti refutes the refutation and establishment of Svātantrika, Śāntarakṣita and Jñānagarbha, who hold the position of the teacher Dharmakīrti, also hold the view transmitted from the teacher Dharmakīrti, so although they firmly stand on the achievements of Dharmakīrti, because the refutation of the teacher Chandrakirti is directed at Dharmakīrti, when the Madhyamaka and the Realists debate, both the attacker and the defender abandon the view that they must agree on the Dharma established by valid cognition, etc. They explain that it is not necessary, as the Prāsaṅgikas say. Their way of explaining is that it is impossible for the Madhyamaka and the Realists to agree on the basis of refutation and establishment, i.e., the Dharma, etc., because the Madhyamaka denies truth on the same basis with the valid cognition of others, while the Realists cling to and argue for truth with their own Svātantrika valid cognition. So, how should the basis of refutation and establishment, i.e., the Dharma, etc., be established? It is not the conventional truth of appearance reversal and imputation reversal, but the ultimate truth admitted by the world, (92b) for the overall Madhyamaka, from the wise who are considered to be true conventional truth to the cowherds, with their unexamined innate wisdom, after the thoughts of the opponent, they cling to the mere appearance of sprouts and other Dharmas, rather than the sprouts and inner generation stages established in their own system by conventional valid cognition. As it says in the root commentary of the Ratnāvalī: "If all dharmas are admitted to be without self-nature, then since the parts of the directions and other dharmas are not established in themselves, is it not the case that the terms of inference and what is to be inferred are not established? Therefore, how does the inferer determine? If, again, the reason for establishing all dharmas as without self-nature is not stated, then since it is not established without reason, the desired meaning is not established. If it is stated, then there is a reason, even so, since all dharmas without self-nature are not established, the desired meaning is not established." This is because, like this, the distinctions produced by the scriptures, abandoning the Dharma, for the wise and the women and children, for the things that have become famous, the things to be established and established.
