Even so, when seeking that based on the establishment of the conventional truth of the extensive phenomena of things, the way of relying on the conventional, the way of establishing conventional dharmas as terms, the two, the consequentialists and the autonomists, have different views. Among them, we who enjoy the dharmas with characteristics all hold that these dharmas are established as real because they function, and are self-established, not only grasped innately but also clung to by imputation. Then, from the point of view of functioning, does that which has the function of seeing as real function from the power of the thing itself entering into self-establishment? Or does the thing itself, even if it does not enter into self-establishment, merely appear to function by being designated? Those who speak of things say that the thing itself functions from the power of entering into self-establishment. Thus, by functioning, the thing is also self-established, and that is also the ultimate truth, because the functioning itself also enters by the power of self-established reality, so there is no deception in it, so whatever dharma is true by the power of the thing entering, that is ultimately true and established. Dharmas that do not agree with the appearance of the mind grasping at reality from beginningless time are not established in meaning, so they are unreal and false. For example, the Mind-Only school believes that because it is a false appearance, it is separated from the grasped and grasper of the sense consciousness looking outward, and is only the inner-looking consciousness, only the object of awareness (84a), that itself is the function of entering into the power of self-establishment, so that itself is also the function of clarifying and knowing by the power of reality. Thus, what becomes a thing after functioning is the ultimate truth, which is truly established. Such a valid cognition is the valid cognition of the ultimate truth, that is, the previous delusion of dualistic appearance, later not separated from that, and becomes the clarifier of meaning, like inverted discrimination. Both the Consequentialists and the Autonomists agree that the thing that has become the ultimate truth functions by the power of entering, and the valid cognition that establishes that meaning is consistent in both truths. Because there is no real thing that can function in the thing that has become the ultimate truth, so they think. Even so, the Autonomists believe that the conventional thing is a dharma that can function by the power of entering.

Now, although the valid cognition by which it is established does not exist in the ultimate sense, when it is established as the conventional truth, the conventional, illusion-like object, empowered by strength, has the quality of being able to perform a function, and the valid cognition by which it is established is posited as existing there. Whatever conventional object is posited, it is posited there in terms of its ability to perform a function or to hold its own characteristic. And whatever is the quality of its function and its holding of its own characteristic depends on the causes and conditions that cause the self-established object to function and hold its own characteristic by its own power. In "The Blazing Logic," it is said: Without the ladder of true conventions, to go to the top of the true house is not suitable for the wise. Thus it is said. That which is called "good house" is the good house of liberation, manifestly superior to the three realms, built by immeasurable virtuous craftsmen, well adorned with extremely high pillars of the limbs of enlightenment, plastered with the white lime of infinite virtuous dharmas, illuminated by the rays of light from the moon-like face of the Sugata, having completely dispelled all obscurations, the abode of the omniscient. To ascend to its top, without having practiced the ladder of the true conventional truth in countless eons, and without having perfected the perfections, powers, and superknowledges, it is not possible to be able to do so by mere conjecture. The Bhagavan also said: Without the conventional dharmas, it is not possible to realize the ultimate. Thus it is said. Since it is so, therefore, objects of the conventional truth should be well distinguished by intelligence. The term "conventional" means to distinguish all objects such as form, that is, the undeluded worldly expression. That itself is the truth, because it is the valid cognition that goes from all establishments. Among them, first, form has two kinds and twenty kinds, and so on. Similarly, letters, treatises, arithmetic, ways of speaking, causes of inheritance of wealth, medicine, divination, and mantras, and so on, whatever is renowned in the world, has been shown to be well distinguished. Among them (85b) dharmas, etc.
