So, does the fruit arise from a destroyed thing, or does it arise from an undestroyed thing? If one analyzes in this way, then that analysis leads to the establishment of cause and effect in conventional truth. If one analyzes cause and effect in conventional truth with reason, then this is established as amenable to analysis by valid reasoning, and this is not established. This is the false accusation made by those who assert things as real. The Madhyamikas do not establish conventional truth through analysis, for if they were to establish it in that way, they would incur the fault of having to accept things that are amenable to analysis, because they are tainted by the supreme fault. In particular, if one analyzes, the fruit does not arise from either a destroyed or an undestroyed cause. If the fruit arises from a destroyed cause, it would follow that everything arises from everything. If it arises from an undestroyed cause, the fruit would become independent of conditions. If one claims that the fruit arises from a destroyed cause, then later things would become annihilated. If one claims that the fruit arises from an undestroyed cause, then all things would become simultaneously permanent, because what is destroyed cannot be a cause, and what is undestroyed and permanent also cannot be a cause. When analyzed in this way, the relationship of cause and effect (191b) and its basis, etc., can be slightly established even in name, without the mixing of elaborations. This is the supreme and wonderful doctrine of this Dharma tradition. Now, I will speak of how the assertion that destruction is a real entity is contrary to reason. In general, how do the worldly and the authors of treatises who assert things as real classify the destruction of things? Even in name, it is completely unreasonable to consider destruction as a real entity. First, Tsongkhapa says, destruction is a real entity, because both the function of destruction and non-destruction are real entities. If the first is not established, destruction is a real entity, because destruction has a cause. If it is not established, it would follow that it is established. If not abiding in the second moment has a cause, then not abiding in the second moment also has a cause in the same way. And, the help of the cause that arises in the first moment of the sprout causes the real fruit of destruction to arise in the second moment. And, even though the destruction of the sprout cannot now be produced by a cause, the destruction itself is made by the cause, so it has a cause. And again, the destruction of the seed.
