Therefore, it will not contradict the four seals of the Dharma either, and one can also establish one's own sect and this Dharma. If one only enters one's own sect and this Dharma, it is not pervasive enough to make the Buddha's teachings correct, because for various Yogācāra teachings, it is the same reason that the part of the teachings that considers things as real cannot make the Buddha's teachings correct, some say. Some Śrāvakabuddhas say that at the time of creating karma, something called "non-loss" is immediately produced, which is similar to a promissory note. Although with a promissory note, one can use the loan, but just as the creditor's property is not lost, and the principal and interest are recovered, although the karma similar to the loan has stopped, the continuity of non-loss exists, so the relationship of cause and effect is reasonable. Also, some Vaibhāṣikas say that there is something called "attainment," from the cause of attaining good, non-good, and neutral dharmas, until they are not abandoned, whether these dharmas manifest or not, a substance is produced to establish correspondence with these dharmas. They say that the system of karma and effect is established on this continuity. These statements are unreasonable, because non-loss and attainment seem to be considered as real Saṃskāra that are unrelated to correspondence. However, apart from form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, these three valid cognitions cannot determine its existence, so it is unreasonable. If it is reasonable, it will lead to the fault of Saṃskāra being permanent, etc. Are non-loss and attainment the cause of producing Saṃskāras? Or are they the cause of non-separation? The first statement is unreasonable, because before the Saṃskāras are produced, they are also not produced, so they will never be produced. And, when the Saṃskāras are produced, no effect of them is seen. The second statement is also unreasonable, because in the continuum of one person, contradictory dharmas that do not coexist (186b) such as good and non-good, contaminated and uncontaminated, what is to be abandoned and the antidote will exist simultaneously. The Sautrāntikas and other schools say that the system of karma and effect is established on the latent impressions and seeds that good, non-good, and neutral dharmas have imprinted on the mind continuum. To this, those who acknowledge the Ālayavijñāna say: The previous statement is unreasonable, it is good to establish it on seeds and latent impressions, but even so, without the Ālayavijñāna, the seeds and latent impressions themselves are impossible, because

Since the consciousnesses that perish are not constant, it is meaningless to imprint habits on them. If it were meaningful, then the result of karma would arise from something that has been destroyed for a long time, which would mean that something arises from nothing or that something that has ceased to exist becomes real. The entering consciousnesses are marked as good, bad, tainted, untainted, etc., and arise very clearly, so they cannot serve as a basis for habits that are incompatible with them. And, the mental consciousness that arises as good and untainted, such agents are minds and mental factors that are different from oneself, and it is not reasonable for oneself to be the agent of habits for anything. If the former imprints habits on the latter, then one of them does not exist as a thing, so it cannot serve as the object and basis of imprinting. If imprinting occurs on simultaneous things, then the mental consciousness that acts as the agent, such as good, bad, and neutral, cannot arise and cease simultaneously with other mental consciousnesses. And, in states such as fainting, deep sleep, and cessation of consciousness, after being interrupted (187a) for a long time, it is unreasonable for later reasoning to arise from reason, and so on, with many faults. Therefore, the alaya consciousness, from beginningless samsara until nirvana without remainder, the continuum never ceases, and it is unmarked. Because it is not clear, it does not contradict any dharma such as good, bad, and neutral in the same continuum. It is also not unchanging like space and individually realized cessation. It arises and ceases simultaneously with the agent's good, bad, and neutral dharmas in the same continuum, so it can serve as the basis for habits. From such a continuum of alaya consciousness, according to the conditions, the results of the same cause and maturation arise as they are, whether in this life or experienced after birth and other times, they will arise at that time as they are. As it is said in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle: "The constant and unmarked is what is imprinted, it is related to the agent, it is not other than the agent, this is the nature of habit." So it is said. But this is also unreasonable, because there is no proof for the existence of such an alaya consciousness. If it exists, then it becomes a self.
