because it is harmful; if there is a self, it contradicts the four seals of Dharma and one cannot attain liberation, therefore it is not suitable as the teaching of the Teacher. It is not appropriate to accept the substantial existence of a person by the former and these two. Then, the teachings of those who accept the self should be the teachings of the Teacher. If it is not, then those schools should not be their own schools, and those schools are also the teachings of the Teacher who speaks of the tenets of the Hinayana Vaibhashika and Sautrantika schools, so it is said. Redawa said: Those who speak of the self are considered to have become external to the Buddha's teachings, because the Buddha's teachings are distinguished by teaching non-self. Therefore, those who speak of the self are not the tenet proponents of the Teacher. Then, how are all those schools included in the teachings of the Tathagata? The teachings of the Tathagata are distinguished by pure morality and pure view. Therefore, all eighteen schools have not lost the training of higher morality (185b), so all are included in the Buddha's teachings. Among them, those who do not have a pure view are not the tenet proponents of the Sugata, because different tenets are distinguished by different views. Thus, the eighteen schools are those who have pure training in higher morality, and the four tenet proponents are those who have training in higher wisdom. Therefore, those schools that speak of a person are included in the nominal Buddhist teachings because they have not lost the training of higher morality, but because they have lost the training of higher wisdom, they are also truly outsiders, and they will give an affirmative answer to the fault of expressing doubt, and for the first reason, they will answer the unestablished and non-pervasive by distinguishing, and for the latter reason, they will not distinguish and only answer the unestablished. Even so, in reality, clinging to the substantial existence of a person hinders the realization of non-self, so although Buddhism has deviated from the path of liberation, it has not, as the outsiders believe, accepted the nature of the person as an independent, substantially existing self apart from the aggregates.
