Like a city of gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. Thus, using examples such as illusions, based on the very nature of mere appearance in the two truths, those phenomena, in their lack of inherent existence, appear in the world as various arising and ceasing events due to dependent origination, just like the nature of phenomena without inherent existence. Third, the direct and indirect teachings on the basis of karma and its results are taught in the definitive sense. First, although there is no inherent existence, the connection of karma and its results is reasonable, and the meaning is established through examples, and the extreme fault of being utterly devoid of limits is refuted. First: Since it does not cease by its very nature, therefore, although there is no ālaya, it is capable of this. Understand that even from actions that have ceased for a long time, true results will arise. Therefore, in both truths, because there is no inherent existence, not only are we liberated from the view of permanence and annihilation, but also in the conventional truth, even if actions have ceased for a long time, it is meaningless to fully contemplate the nature of things like the ālaya for the sake of the connection between karma and its results, because such substantial things are not established even in the conventional truth. Moreover, as it says in the root text: If it remains until the time of ripening, then that action becomes permanent. If it ceases, having ceased, how can it produce a result? As it says, do actions remain until the time of ripening, or do they not remain because they cease as soon as they arise? In either case, it must be said that things are permanent or impermanent. Thus, the debate arises. Those who accept karma and its results among the outsiders claim that because there is a permanent self of a person, that self experiences the results of actions, so karma and its results, as well as heavens and liberation, are all reasonable. However, according to Buddhists, since there is no self of a person and the aggregates are momentary, karma and its results, as well as heavens and liberation, are not possible, because one would encounter actions one has not done, and actions one has done would be wasted, and others would accumulate merit while others would experience the results, so karma and its results would become confused. Those who say that the aggregates are momentary say: If the Shakyas have no self, then the efforts needed for heavens and liberation would become meaningless. Thus they say. That is not reasonable, because such a basis for karma and its results, the existence of a permanent self, is harmed by the reasoning that will be explained.

And, if the permanent dharma experiences the results of karma, then all the results of karma are either experienced all at once, or never experienced at all. Because the permanent dharma's experience of maturation does not depend on conditions. And, it is contradictory for the permanent, single self to become various things such as suffering and happiness, as well as the lower realms and the higher realms, and liberation. If there is a self (184b), then one cannot abandon self-grasping, because all afflictions arise from self-grasping, so liberation is unreasonable, etc., and endless faults will arise. These proponents of dharma, because they have already committed the faults mentioned above, do not accept the permanent self and karma. In response to this, the Vātsīputrīyas think that if it is impermanent, the faults raised by the outsiders will arise, therefore, they acknowledge the person who is the basis of karma and its results as being neither the same as the aggregates nor different from the aggregates, and who cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent. But this is also unreasonable, because it will be harmed by the reasoning to be explained later. And, at the time of nirvana without remainder, if there is a self, then it should be possible to say that the self is different from the aggregates, because the aggregates have perished but the self has not perished. Therefore, it will also become permanent. If there is no self, when the aggregates perish, the self also perishes, therefore it will become impermanent, and therefore, it can be said to be the same as the aggregates. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika: "That which cannot be said to be impermanent, is not the cause of anything, for that which cannot be said, bondage and liberation, are in no way existent." Just like that, even in conventional terms, it cannot be said to be impermanent, therefore it cannot be a cause, and bondage and liberation are also unreasonable. Other than that, the proponents of real entities acknowledge that the basis of karma and its results is impermanent, and in order to answer the question of how the results arise from karma that has already ceased, they say that even if these are impermanent, until the fruit matures, the continuum of moments (185a) constantly arises from the previous moment to the next moment, therefore the relationship of karma and its results is reasonable. The previous moment has ceased, therefore it is not permanent, and the next moment arises, therefore it is not annihilation, and the continuum of previous and subsequent moments is one, therefore there are no faults such as encountering what has not been done. In response to this, some of the Mahāsāṃghikas acknowledge that the person and sentient being who are the basis of karma and its results are of the same nature as the aggregates, but this is also unreasonable, because it will be harmed by the scriptural and logical proofs to be explained later.
