Among the appearances of duality, is it permissible to speak in a consequential manner solely for the purpose of enabling worldly beings to realize that unique Suchness? It is not permissible (177a). For if one establishes a Dharma of ultimate or truly real truth, one must establish a Dharma of truth that is either truly real in relation to it, or completely false. If one does not establish it, there is no way to enter the ultimate truth. For where there is no falsehood, there is also no truth. For conventional truth is the supreme means of entering the ultimate. Therefore, without examination, worldly people accept that a son is born from his own father, and also born from the womb of another mother, different from the father. Therefore, since when these conventional objects are analyzed, apart from the Dharma of Suchness, which is the ultimate reality, free from arising and ceasing, no place is found where conventional arising and ceasing are established elsewhere. When contemplating Suchness, one examines conventional Dharmas. When worldly people establish convention without examination, one should not analyze the conventional truths of the world. Therefore, without examination, it is reasonable to make what worldly people see, "this arising because of this," merely a consequential statement for others. For it is necessary to enter that very Suchness by relying on its acceptance and rejection. As it is said: "Just as a barbarian of a different language cannot grasp it, so too, apart from the worldly, one cannot grasp the world." And as it is said in the scriptures: "Without relying on conventions, one will never realize the meaning of the ultimate. If one does not realize the meaning of the ultimate, one will never attain the fruit of peaceful Nirvana." Thus it is said. When examining conventional Dharmas, all conventions disappear in the eyes of the world. As it is said in the sutras: "For example, relying on wood and strings, when the effort of the hands is combined, sounds arise from lutes, harps, flutes, and so on. Therefore, if the wise examine, 'From where does this come, and where does it go?' and examine all directions and intermediate directions, the coming and going of sound cannot be found. Thus, from various causes and conditions, assembling

All transformed things arise. Yogis who practice with correct view see all actions as empty and without movement. Aggregates, sense bases, and elements are empty inside and empty outside. Sentient beings are empty and have no dwelling place. Thus, and so on, is extensively explained. Because of the need for linguistic meaning, nominal terms are accepted, and when engaging in them, one should not analyze them before accepting them, because analysis will not find them, and therefore no establishment of nominal terms is allowed. Furthermore, when one is bound by the characteristics of nominal terms, one should examine and analyze the nominal terms with reason and strive to pacify the signs of elaboration. Those who establish nominal terms after analyzing them with reason will have established nominal terms in a reversed manner. If nominal terms can be established by analyzing them with reason, then they will become ultimate truth and cannot be nominal terms. If they cannot be established (178a), then nominal terms will disappear and become ultimate truth. The second is: At that time, by what kind of reason is it unreasonable for arising to be from self and other? By that reason, it is also unreasonable in nominal terms. By what will your arising be established? Those who are attached to things are afraid that analyzing the existence of all established things in the two truths will lead to the suspicion of the world being annihilated, so they say that there exists a dharma established by the nature of substance, which is the cause of samsara and nirvana, and of all defilements and purifications. Even if they assert this, it cannot be established in reality. Therefore, when analyzing the ultimate truth itself, by what kind of reason, as mentioned above, is it unreasonable for things to arise from self and other? By the established reason, in nominal terms, arising from self and other, etc., is also unreasonable. By what will your arising in the two truths be established? Therefore, arising will not be established. The absence of arising in the two truths also depends on the wisdom of the yogi, and it is established in order to pacify the signs of arising, etc. Otherwise, the signlessness of non-arising is established, and there is no one who establishes it in this way, so everything is just a name, and where is even a little bit of what is essential? Furthermore, some Svātantrika Madhyamikas, when analyzing illusory appearances like illusions, even though they claim that they are free from elaboration even in conventional truth, but
