Therefore, in this way, annihilation is abandoned. It should not be said that the seed exists when the sprout is present, because the earth sprout does not exist alone. In this way, permanence is also completely abandoned. As it is said: If the seed exists, then like the sprout. What is the seed is not the self of the sprout. It is not from it, nor is it that, so the nature of things is neither permanent nor annihilated. As it is said, the earth sprout is not other, because if the seed exists, the sprout arises; what is the seed, the sprout will not change, because self, other, and both are impossible. Because the two are neither one nor different. The earth sprout arises and ceases in dependence, which is separated from the permanence that always occurs and the annihilation that never occurs. (172n) Therefore, if the earth sprouts have self-nature, there is no other form than the self-nature of oneness and otherness, but since there is not that, therefore, since there is no self-nature, the relationship of the earth sprouts is merely a designation. Like the earth sprout in a dream, how can it become one and other? For this reason, the sutra says: All conditioned phenomena are conditioned by ignorance, those conditioned phenomena are not their own self, these two conditioned phenomena of ignorance are emptiness, and by nature they are free from movement. And, the treatise also says: That which arises in dependence on what, that is not temporarily that self, nor is it other than that, therefore it is neither permanent nor annihilated. And, Aryadeva said: Because things enter into change, therefore they will not become annihilated, because things return to change, therefore they will not become permanent. The second is: If self-nature depends on change, because of denying it, things will be destroyed. If emptiness becomes the cause of the destruction of things, that is unreasonable, therefore things do not exist. Therefore, it must be undoubtedly admitted that nothing arises by its own nature. If it is not so, if all the dharmas from form to omniscience are not merely designated, but their self-nature arises or arises in dependence on the cause and condition of their own essence, then emptiness says that the inherent self-nature of things does not exist, so it will become the cause of the destruction of things.

If the proponents see emptiness, then because they deny the arising of things by their own characteristics, they cause things to be destroyed. Like a hammer destroying a pot (172b). If that is the view, it is not reasonable, because things do not arise by their own nature and characteristics. As it says in the Ratnakuta Sutra: 'Well-protected, furthermore, to properly distinguish the dharmas of the Middle Way, it is not that emptiness makes the dharmas empty, but the dharmas themselves are empty; it is not that signlessness makes the dharmas signless, but the dharmas themselves are signless; it is not that wishlessness makes the dharmas wishless, but the dharmas themselves are wishless; it is not that non-action makes the dharmas non-action, but the dharmas themselves are non-action; it is not that the unborn dharmas make the dharmas unborn, but the dharmas themselves are unborn; it is not that the unarisen makes the dharmas unarisen, but the dharmas themselves are unarisen.' It is extensively taught. Here, in the great tradition of Tsongkhapa's Middle Way, it is said: 'All dharmas are empty of their own nature, the emptiness of emptiness. The pot is not empty by the pot, but the pot is empty by truth. The pot is self-empty.' This statement completely denies the prior schools that are refuted by this treatise and its commentaries, as well as the vast Middle Way scriptures, and yet it is acknowledged here. How is it acknowledged? Because this school well refutes that partial emptiness can replace profound emptiness, and it well explains the principle of pervasive emptiness. But you speak contrary to this school. This prevents speaking of partial emptiness as the principle of emptiness (173a). For example, the Mind-Only school says that on the other-powered consciousness, there is the emptiness of the apprehended and the apprehender, the imputed, but they believe that the self-nature of the other-powered consciousness is not empty. That kind of emptiness that you believe is not the ultimate emptiness that pervades all dharmas. Because in the two truths, there remains a dharma that is not empty in the ultimate truth, therefore it is said that emptiness is partial.' In this way, the fault is passed on to the one who asserts existence. You
