The scriptures of meaning are kept in one's own system as they are pronounced, and are acknowledged. In all the scriptures of definitive meaning that are inconsistent with this, whether or not they are truly established, and emptiness, and all dharmas such as their opposites, are each empty in their own nature, and it is proclaimed that there is no self-nature. If it is said that the meaning of uprightness is not as it is pronounced, and it is said that emptiness is emptiness, there is concern that it will become non-empty. In short, starting from all the knowable dharmas of the Blessed One, the pervasive emptiness such as twenty and sixteen is well taught, and to this, some acknowledge and some do not. If acknowledged, it would be a fault to the teacher himself, so the words of the Sugata are judged impartially. In short, if one speaks of this Dharma, one must acknowledge the three or four seals that do not deviate from the teachings. However, for those of this system, it is fine to follow any of the four schools that speak of the Great and Small Vehicles. They instead proclaim the opposite of all dharmas being empty and selfless, that is, the innate wisdom of the world, for individuals and dharmas, in their respective cognitions, there exists a self-nature established by valid cognition that is not tainted by temporary illusions. And, in whatever case of the two truths, they do not argue that I am not real, but argue that I am not real, and, for a dharma that should be argued as emptiness, even if there is actually nothing that can be recognized again, they pretend to search, but even if they search, they cannot find it, that is the meaning of emptiness. Emptiness is free from elaboration, and even so, since it is not a reality established from the object itself, it is unreal, but emptiness as emptiness is fundamentally established. Emptiness and unreality, and the truth therein, and unreality existing as unreality, therefore block the establishment of both true establishment and truth. They deceive all those who have faith in profound emptiness and possess perfect qualities with the guise of words, because speculative words have no meaning. In order to deceive, they proclaim that this way of Dharma is not accumulative, and therefore cannot be understood. This proclamation is like a sign of death for those who desire liberation, so for their sake it is said, according to that system, no matter what they say, the meaning of their attachment and the guises of words they express...

If the thought of conforming to the world arises, then here it will become: the views or discriminations of worldly people who have not seen the true reality alone become the standard for measuring things; the noble ones are the opposite of this; children see the true reality, while the noble ones do not see it; various consciousnesses enter the real state of objects and are not confused; the meditative wisdom of the noble ones is confused; what exists without rational analysis, exists in conventional truth, exists in name, exists as imputation, exists falsely, exists deceptively, exists in deceptive appearance, exists without examination, exists in the eyes of children, etc., all abide in the real meaning; and the opposites of these do not abide in the real meaning. (167a) All phenomena are like illusion, dream, moon in water, image, cataract, echo, mirage water, bubble, banana tree, like a head injury, lightning, cloud, rainbow, gandharva city, hair net, double moon, emanation, etc., not established as they appear, and are said to be non-existent; everything is established as it appears and is non-existent; the teaching that is free from all extremes of elaboration such as arising and ceasing, permanence and annihilation, oneness and otherness, becomes not definitive; all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, naturally completely liberated, etc., all scriptures that teach from the beginning to be free from all elaboration and characteristics are of provisional meaning; and the opposite of these, various statements such as permanence and annihilation, truth and falsehood, all become definitive, just as the literal meaning; the Madhyamaka school's tenet, which arises merely in accordance with worldly convention, free from all extremes of elaboration such as existence and non-existence, arising and ceasing, coming and going, permanence and annihilation, oneness and otherness, is correct; and the tenets of the inner and outer heretical schools that cling to existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, etc., become without error; the wisdom of the Buddha, who sees equally without any difference between the characteristics and nature of all phenomena such as samsara and nirvana, what should be abandoned and adopted, existence and non-existence, the three times, etc. (167b) is mistaken, these are different.
