Because conventional valid cognition is not renowned in the world. If the way things exist in themselves is not established in the world, then the valid cognition that grasps them will not be established in the world either. In particular, the Blessed One based his teachings on the mere existence of conventional entities, and the world calls the consciousness of the mind that distinguishes between right and wrong a valid cognition, and distinguishes between truth and falsehood. However, when contemplating reality, he said that they are not valid cognitions. But regarding the meaning of the existence of conventional entities, he did not say a single word about the distinction between whether worldly wisdom is valid cognition or not. If he had said so, then the teachers Nagarjuna and his son, along with their followers, should have said so in order to fulfill his intention, but they did not. Because you cannot find a single verse that clearly says that they said so, behind the argument of that profound Dharma, there is no other citation than the words of Manjushri himself. Therefore, the Lankavatara Sutra says: "All things exist, just as children discriminate. If he sees this and this exists, then all will be seen as they are." And the Sixty Stanza Reasoning says: "If things were truly real, as children discriminate, what reason would there be for anyone not to want them to be unreal, what use would there be for liberation?" (165n) Furthermore, even if worldly valid cognition sees that very thing, what is the use of still relying on the noble path of hearing and discipline, etc., which are part of the means? If that is the case, then what is the use of the noble path of hearing, etc.? Because striving there will not have a meaningful result. What is that which worldly eyes, etc., validly cognize that very thing? If one validly cognizes in that way, then that alone is sufficient for liberation, so there is no need for other noble paths. Furthermore, if one doubts that even if worldly valid cognition sees that very thing, it has not become noble because it has not abandoned ignorance, then the wisdom that has been fooled by ignorance is also not valid cognition, because for any thing, if any subject has not validly cognized it, then it is not valid cognition. It is like a person who is not a gem cutter does not recognize a gem. Therefore, the Samadhiraja Sutra says: "Eyes, ears, and nose are not valid cognition, nor are tongue, body, and mind."

. If these faculties were valid cognizers, what would the noble path do for anyone? Since these faculties are not valid cognizers, entities by their very nature are unspecified. Therefore, whoever desires the path of nirvana should engage in the activities of the noble path. So it is said. Some might think that this passage shows that worldly faculties are not valid cognizers, but it is not a passage that shows that sense consciousnesses are not valid cognizers, because here it distinguishes the common basis of entities and valid cognizers and shows that it cannot be established. This is a misunderstanding. If that were the case, then the mind would also not be a valid cognizer, because entities are unspecified. It is said that this is implied by the words (165b). According to you, that passage would also have the fault of saying that the mind is an entity. We do not accept your distorted clinging in that way. If the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., of the world are renowned as valid cognizers, and they are said to arise from objects, forms, and the co-emergent condition of the faculties, then if those are unspecified by their very nature, how could the consciousnesses that take them as their cause be the fruit of virtue or non-virtue by their very nature? Because if the cause is negated, the fruit will not arise. This is what is meant. The meaning of the words: The great Eastern Tsongkhapa and his followers, and most of the later consequentialists who sided with them, and those who say that "existing in name like this is enough to prove existence," and those who think that dependent arising is not separate from the eight extremes such as arising and ceasing, and those who think that all phenomena are elaborated in conventional truth and therefore are sufficient to be elaborated, and that in ultimate truth they are separate from elaboration and therefore are not sufficient to be unelaborated, and those who think that all dualities such as the two truths and emptiness and non-emptiness, compounded and uncompounded, subject and nature, etc., exist separately in reality, and that in order to make such existence the end of elaboration, if one examines with conceptual thought, then all phenomena of the two truths are established as being true in meaning without deceiving, just as they are established by reason and nominal valid cognizers, those who rely on inferior words generate confusion in small minds with the term "examining the meaning," and those who explain those dualities as being equal, etc., because they do not exist in reality, so that explanation is because it is truly established from the side of the object itself, so it is necessary to explain emptiness as being equal, and then again adding (166a) and speaking, and the straight.
