Moreover, if the Great Black Robe Master says, "It is a great mistake to explain it this way according to the Prasangika view," and criticizes Tsongkhapa, what difference is there from a crow trying to wipe a clean surface with its defiled beak? Similarly, since the grasping at true existence, which apprehends phenomena dependent on causes and conditions as truly established therein, is said to be the ignorance of the afflictive obscuration. If it were not the ignorance of the afflictive obscuration, the twelve links of dependent origination would not arise from it. But it is not that they do not arise, as it says in the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness": Those things that depend on causes and conditions, To conceive of as truly existent, That is what the Teacher called ignorance, From that the twelve links arise. Therefore, such a grasping at truth primarily obstructs the attainment of liberation, so it is the afflictive obscuration; and the habit of grasping at truth and the mind that clings to the aggregates as unreal like illusions primarily obstruct the attainment of omniscience, so they are regarded as the cognitive obscuration. As it says in the "Uttaratantra": Whatever is the conceptualization of the three spheres, That is considered the obscuration of knowledge. Thus, all conventional phenomena do not appear to the Buddhas in all ways, because they have fully awakened to all aspects of all phenomena. The activity of mind and mental factors has ceased completely. Therefore, due to the power of being obscured by ignorance, both afflicted and unafflicted, the Bhagavan spoke of conventional truth and mere convention. What ordinary beings see as conventional truth, the noble ones see as false, merely an appearance of convention. And the emptiness of the nature of that mere convention is the ultimate truth in the presence of the noble ones' equipoise. The Buddhas do not see anything other than the unmistaken ultimate truth, but childish beings focus only on the deceptive conventional truth. Therefore, for the fully enlightened Buddhas, since both afflicted and unafflicted ignorance, which are the causes, have ceased, both conventional truth and mere convention, which are the results, have also ceased. Due to this key point, the words of Jetsun Rendawa say: If the Tathagatas also have the appearance of objects such as forms, then it would become that they have not abandoned delusion.

Because the appearance of false realms is like the consciousness of dreams and so forth. If it appears but there is no clinging to it as true, will it not become confused? If a person with cataracts sees hair-nets and double moons in the sky, because they do not manifestly cling to these as being genuine hair-nets and double moons and so forth, it will not become confusion. If the impure appearances of earth, stones, and so forth are because of ignorance, then for the Thus-gone Ones, the pure appearances of golden ground and jeweled palaces and so forth, which do not appear [to ordinary beings], are the self-appearances of wisdom (160b), arising as the unobstructed power, so having that does not become confusion, is that so? That pure appearance is also not established as truly existent, because it arises from roots of virtue such as aspirations and purifying fields, therefore it is dependently originated. If those did not arise from causes and conditions but were established by their own nature, what would the non-Buddhists say? Snowflakes, saffron, flowers, milk, yogurt, pearl-colored, like the shape of an unfurled umbrella, the Victorious Ones say is liberation. Just as when transcending the three realms, one desires liberation like a white umbrella held aloft, this is the same as their thought, therefore this teaching has become non-Buddhist. Therefore, although the conventional does not appear to the Buddha, the Buddha's knowing all that is said and performing activities such as turning the wheel of Dharma are not contradictory. Because the cause for doing so, the dependent arising of the accumulation of merit, the result of having correctly practiced in the past during the time of the bodhisattva's conduct, will certainly not be wasted. This statement, for the view that the Buddha does not have the mind that measures conventional appearances, I see as an impartial good explanation. In the introductory letter written by Rta nag go bo: If the conventional truth is true, then existence is not pervasive; if the nominal truth is true, then existence is pervasive. If it exists conventionally, then existence is not pervasive; if it exists nominally, then existence is pervasive. Nowadays, although many people follow each self-satisfied statement, outwardly disagreeing, if the beginning and end of the Madhyamaka system are arranged, is there any other way to speak other than this? Please consider it well. There is not even a little bit of a point of focus (161a).
