Because this treatise indicates that the false appearance that contradicts fame should be abandoned. This treatise, "Depending on Intelligence," then becomes an argument for the opposite. Because that scripture is intended to show that in the context of examining ultimate reality, both the correct and incorrect of the conventional are equally true if true, and equally false if false. And this scripture is intended to show both the correct and incorrect only on the conventional level, in accordance with worldly fame. Second, how does what is seen by one whose eyes are covered with cataracts not harm the knowledge without cataracts? Similarly, the mind of an ordinary person who has abandoned stainless wisdom does not harm stainless wisdom. Here, refuting other-birth, there is no harm from worldly direct perception, because the distinction of conventional truth is made by following worldly people and narrating truth and falsehood. Refuting other-birth is not merely staying in the sight of worldly people and refuting it by following them, but refuting it based on the observation of the noble ones. For example, the hairs and so on seen by one whose eyes are covered with cataracts do not cause the harm of delusion to the knowledge without cataracts. Similarly, the mind of an ordinary person who has abandoned stainless wisdom, even if deluded and seeing other-birth, does not cause the harm of delusion to the stainless wisdom of the noble ones. Because the sight of ordinary people is not recognized by the noble ones, it is a laughable matter. Second, explaining the nature of the conventional and the ultimate. First, ignorance is conventional because it obscures reality, and whatever is fabricated by it appears as untrue, that is said by the capable one to be conventionally true, and things that have become fabricated are conventional. After stating the nature of all things in terms of the two truths, the conventional truth of the world is explained, that is, ignorance (158a) makes sentient beings ignorant of reality, or falsely distinguishes it from reality, thereby obscuring the realization of the nature of reality. Therefore, such a dharma is called conventional, the reason has been stated. The nature of ignorance, that is, the conventional, makes things that have no nature cling to them as if they exist, but in reality they are not.
