Should we speak of 'now'? Or should we speak of 'imputed existence'? The answer is, we should speak of 'subsequent existence', because it is encompassed by the ultimate truth. It is like that. The Madhyamikas refute it, saying that if such an ultimately real substance existed, there would be no Buddha, and even if there were a Buddha, it would not exist. If there were even a slight existence of phenomena as substances that could withstand rational analysis, then the three bases, paths, and results, (152a) and dharma and non-dharma together with their fruits, and all the terms of worldly and transworldly existence would be impossible, because it is never possible for nature to change into something else. Moreover, the definition of ultimate truth for the realists also becomes conventional truth here, as it says in the treatises of the Svatantrikas: "What others consider a corpse, I consider my wife." So, do the two truths of the Prasangika Madhyamikas have a unique system of signifier and signified? It is not so. That is to say, when dispelling the delusions of the proponents of philosophical tenets from the outsiders and the Sravakas of our own school up to the Svatantrika Madhyamikas, regarding those definitions that hold the nature of ultimately existing substances to be truly established, they also consider that the characteristic of ultimate truth. If that definition does not enter into that definition's basis, it will show the inevitable fault, thereby dispelling the wrong conceptions of others. When the Prasangika Madhyamikas themselves rely on conventional truth to make distinctions of what to adopt and what to abandon, they do not apply the basis of signifier and signified, which is established by their own system, to terminology. Instead, they follow the unexamined, worldly, and contradictory conventional terminology to engage in adopting and abandoning. Thus, for their own system, it is merely imputed. If, from the perspective of analysis, even the definition of ultimate truth is not established, then its nature cannot be found. At that time, even if only the name that is signified by that definition remains, that name is also empty of its own essence, (152b) who could find the nature of the definition that is far beyond the ultimate emptiness, which is the realm of the wisdom of the noble ones? Therefore, in the definitive scriptures of Sutra and Tantra, it is said: "All is the nature of space."

Therefore, as it is said in the scriptures, "Even in the sky, there is no characteristic." If one understands such a key point, some may doubt: Can the ultimate truth withstand the analysis of non-affirming negation? If it cannot withstand analysis, then emptiness will become a non-non-affirming negation, but an affirmative one. If it can withstand analysis, then emptiness will become a non-affirming negation that is truly established. All these groundless doubts will disappear like a snake knot unraveling in the sky. This is the teaching of the great accomplished Buddha Nyenpa Rinchen. So, for the characteristic of the ultimate truth, is there a dharma that is not harmed by reason, can withstand analysis, whose own nature does not deceive and exists in reality, and becomes the object of an unerring subject? If you say it exists, then you will become proponents of inherent existence. If it does not exist, then distinguishing whether or not it has such a characteristic becomes meaningless. To this, the Prasangikas, we do not assert that the ultimate truth with such a characteristic exists in reality, just as we do not assert that the conventional truth with the opposite characteristic exists in reality. This is because the two are mutually dependent. I have extensively explained the rationality of this principle in the first and fourth chapters of the *Entering the Middle Way*, so those who wish to know should understand it there. Thus, in reality (153a), no valid cognition can establish the true establishment of the ultimate truth that possesses such characteristics. Nevertheless, if one holds to an extreme and asserts that the ultimate truth is established in reality, then there must be a true establishment of the ultimate truth that possesses such characteristics. However, we Prasangikas believe that the true establishment of the ultimate truth with such characteristics is harmed by rational analysis, so it cannot be established there either. Since it is not established there, both truths are primordially empty of inherent existence, devoid of the three aspects of sign, signified, and basis; devoid of the three aspects of measure, result, and measuring; and devoid of all the proliferation of object and subject, like being unable to write in the sky. For this inexpressible, inconceivable, and unutterable state, we merely nominally call it the ultimate truth in the eyes of ordinary people, that is, worldly people, and make distinctions. Therefore, there is a special need to dispel the great misconception that the two truths with characteristics, which are proliferated with true establishment and so on, enter into the nature of knowables.
