If asked, are the activities of arising and ceasing simultaneous? No, because activity is not established as being different from the dharma. Furthermore, when a seed ceases, there is no agent sprout, the activity of the sprout's arising, as a subject of dharma. It is also not reasonable, because the agent sprout of the activity of arising is in the future, so it does not exist. If it does not exist, then there is no dependent, because there is no agent upon which to depend. The activities of arising and ceasing cannot be established as simultaneous. Then, in the Sutra of the Sala Forest, doesn't it say that just as the high and low of a balance, in the instant that a seed ceases, a sprout arises? (135b) If asked, isn't that what it says? It does say that. But that is not for the purpose of showing the arising of other things and their own characteristics, but for the purpose of showing that they arise simultaneously in dependence, established without examination, like an illusion. As it is said in the sutra: From a seed broken or unbroken, A sprout does not arise, Therefore, you said that all arising, Arises like an illusion. Second: If eye consciousness has its own producer, simultaneous, And along with the eye, etc., arising feeling, etc., If there is another, then what need is there for arising? If there is not, then the fault has already been stated. The Vaibhashika Abhidharma masters say that the six causes of equal status, universal going, and maturation causes are not simultaneous with the result, but arise simultaneously, and the corresponding cause is simultaneous with the result. The efficient cause has both simultaneous and non-simultaneous, and there are also those that are not included by time. Some Yogacara Abhidharma masters believe that cause and effect are simultaneous. Some believe that they are not simultaneous. Some believe in both. Although all three of these are included in the scriptural authority of the brothers Asanga, the brothers' main view is that cause and effect are simultaneous. They believe that the causal condition characteristic is the alaya consciousness, and that all dharmas that leave impressions on it, and all dharmas that arise from the alaya, are simultaneous. Because if cause and effect were sequential, then when the result arises, the cause would have ceased, and there would be the fault of arising from nothing. Therefore, they think in this way. Therefore, those who, like the Vaibhashikas, believe that cause and effect are simultaneous.

Thinking: If a sprout does not exist simultaneously, then otherness will not be established, therefore it should not arise. Wherever there is simultaneous existence, there is otherness, therefore arising exists (136a). For example, eye consciousness and all the mental factors such as feeling, which arise simultaneously and correspondingly with it, are mutually simultaneous causes and effects. If things that arise simultaneously, such as the eye and color and feeling, only produce eye consciousness simultaneously, just as the eye and so on and the mind and so on only become the cause of feeling and so on simultaneously, then, if the wisdom of the eye as the result, its producer, the eye and color and so on that are simultaneous with itself, and the consciousness and so on, the mind and mental factors that arise simultaneously with itself, are other than eye consciousness, then eye consciousness must exist. If it does not exist, it cannot be placed outside of otherness. If it is admitted, then the existence established in the result will also arise, then what is the need for existence? Therefore it should be non-existent. If it has already arisen and exists, then the eye and consciousness and so on as producers are meaningless. If it is said that because one does not wish for non-arising, eye consciousness does not exist, then to the one who says this, the fault has already been stated that from non-existent wisdom, the eye and so on are not other. Therefore, in all cases, only the empty sound of the expression "arising from other" remains. Even in the case of simultaneous existence, it can be assumed that there is otherness, but it will not arise. Because it will not arise, both will not arise. In the case of prior and subsequent existence, it can be assumed that there is arising, but otherness will not exist. Because otherness will not exist, both will not arise. The third is: If the producer, the produced, produces another, that is the cause. Does it produce something that exists or does not exist, or both, or is separate from both? If it exists, what is the need for a producer? What can it do for the non-existent? What can it do for both? What can it do for what is separate from both? In the two of cause and effect, the time when the effect depends on the cause does not exist (136b). It means that if the producer, with its produced, produces something different from itself, that is the cause, then is the produced something that exists, or is non-existent, or is both, or is separate from both? When it produces that, from that aspect
