Because it is derived from seeing the truth of dependent origination, and because of benefiting sentient beings by (69b) "Hearing this path" as a Northern Transmission, if one understands the suchness of all phenomena, then one can also realize that the basis of the delusion of self-view is without self-nature, thereby eliminating the two obscurations, so it is stated as the main content. Then, is it meaningless to teach the selflessness of persons, since the purpose is accomplished by teaching the selflessness of phenomena alone? No, it is not. Because those with dull faculties gradually enter the teachings, and to show the path to liberation for Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Secondly, it is divided into: extensively refuting the four extremes of arising, explaining that conventional arising is dependent origination, and explaining the necessity of analyzing with reason. First, it is divided into: actually refuting the four extremes of arising, and eliminating contradictions to the refutation. First, it is divided into: following the vow of non-arising, extensively explaining the reasoning for refuting the four extremes of arising, and for that reason, explaining that all phenomena are without self-nature. The first is: That is, it does not arise from itself, nor does it arise from another, how can it arise from both, and how can it exist without a cause? Among the ten proofs of equality, the first eight are equality in the ultimate sense, the ninth, which is explained by seven similes such as illusion, is equality in the conventional sense, and the last is explained as equality in both truths, from which the equality of non-arising is explained through the path of reason. Because other equalities are easy to explain, the teacher says at the beginning of the Treatise on the Middle Way: Not from self, not from other, not from both, not without cause, where is there arising, it never exists. (70a) The meaning of this brief explanation is: Whatever internal and external things depend on self, wherever they depend, in time, and in any school of thought, arising never exists, that is, in all circumstances. Similarly, apply it to the other three cases as well. The word "not" is connected to "not from self," etc., but it is not connected to "existence arising from self," because by negating the cause, the negation of the effect is naturally established. This treatise is the reasoning of the Diamond Splinters by the teacher Kamalashila, etc.

Combined and explained, as it says in the Madhyamaka Illuminating Light: "Like this, those that are truly devoid of arising from self, other, both, and without cause are truly without essence. For example, like a lotus in the sky, etc. All things that are said to truly exist by self and other are just like that." And it says: "Therefore, in order to destroy all the differences of things spoken of by self and other, the great lords have well spoken of these four unobstructed vajra slivers, so all these paths are not contradictory." Combine this with this treatise. Like the teacher Lekdenjed, etc., combine with the four self-sufficient tenets of preventing arising, and supplement from the aspects of reason and example. Although that is so, the teacher Sangye Gyang and the two great commentaries of the teacher here, combine with the four consequentialist tenets of preventing the arising of the four extremes (page 70b), and it is best to supplement from the aspect of reasoning, because it is unreasonable for the intention of the noble ones to be self-sufficient. Thus, first state the four tenets, and then establish them with reasoning, namely: Not arising from self, because it does not arise from itself. And: Not arising from other, because if it does not arise from self, how can it arise from other? And: Not arising from both, because if it does not arise from each one, it does not arise from both. And: Not arising from no cause, because where can there be arising without cause? So, haven't these four tenets already been established by the teacher before? What is there to establish here again? The teacher said: "The nature of things is not in conditions, etc." Etc., here mainly only explains the reason for preventing other-arising, and does not extensively explain the other three. Here, the other three are explained, and in preventing other-arising, other reasoning structures are also explained, so it is arranged in this way. Then, why doesn't the teacher explain the reason for preventing self-arising, etc., here? Because self-arising, etc., are the views of the outsiders, and those views have already been refuted by their own schools, namely sixty.
