In the land of Sāveta, there was a monk named Glorious, who was called Nāga, the destroyer of the sides of existence and non-existence. My teaching in this world, after well explaining the unsurpassed Great Vehicle, having attained the ground of great joy, he will go to Sukhavati. Thus, in many sutras and tantras, the Blessed One prophesied that the noble Nāgārjuna would understand the ultimate intention of the Great Vehicle, and would explain its meaning and teach it to others. In short, although many arose, such as the three schools that claimed to explain the Buddha's intention, and the eighteen divisions, etc. (67a), they did not fully grasp the intention, because they did not abide in the meaning, but speculated with concepts. The way in which the teacher Nāgārjuna explained it was not like that, because he spoke the truth as it is. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: The three realms are merely imputed, by their very nature there are no things. Those who conceptualize imputations as the nature of things, will conceptualize. There is no self-nature and no consciousness, no basis of all and no reality, evil children, conceptualizers, are like corpses, they impute these. Therefore, whatever is manifestly clung to and established, is only speaking outside the Madhyamaka system. Secondly, examining the vessel of the listener, and advising them to listen. Firstly, examining the fortunate outer vessel through the three signs. Then explaining the benefits of teaching emptiness. The first is: Even in the state of an ordinary being, after hearing about emptiness, great joy repeatedly arises within, and tears from great joy moisten the eyes, and the hairs of the body stand on end, that one has the seed of the wisdom of the complete Buddha. That is the vessel for closely showing it, and the truth of the ultimate meaning should be shown to them. This Dharma principle of dependent arising and emptiness should only be taught to those fortunate ones who have previously cultivated hearing and thinking about the nature of emptiness. It is not permissible to teach it to those without fortune, because even if they listen, they will generate great harm with wrong views. There are two kinds of wrong views: thinking that emptiness does not exist, and thinking that emptiness is real.

It is to contemplate on the nature of that. First, there are two aspects: Some unskilled people, such as those who slander the Mahayana, say that emptiness is meaningless. Therefore, the words of the Buddha that teach emptiness are not what they said, because they are the scriptures of annihilationism (67b). Because of this, they accumulate the karma of abandoning the Dharma and will fall into the lower realms. The Mother Sutra says: "Even if one has served countless millions of Buddhas in the past, if one does not believe in the wisdom of the Buddha, the Paramita, having heard it, the small-minded one will abandon it. Having abandoned it, he will become helpless and will go to Avici." So it is. Also, like some Dzogchen Rawa Rokpa, etc., they hold emptiness to be meaningless, and because they slander all things, wrong views increase and generate non-meaning such as the lower realms. The Precious Garland says: "If this Dharma is held in a perverse way, the unskilled will fall into ruin. Those who view it as non-existent will sink into impurity." So it is. Those who want emptiness to be the true meaning also seem to speak of two principles: The great Tsongkhapa and his followers say that emptiness exists, so they also affirm the nature of the things that depend on it. The Jonangpas and Shakya Chokden, etc., most Tibetans say that emptiness is established as true, but in the ultimate sense, all other conventional dharmas are non-existent. Both of them have entered the path of deviating from liberation. Like a patient abandoned by a doctor, they are repeatedly said in many scriptures and their commentaries to be those with incurable views. If emptiness is taught to them, what will be the result? Therefore, the teacher says: "If emptiness is viewed wrongly, the small-minded will be destroyed, like holding a poisonous snake, and wrongly practicing mantras (68n)." And the Lankavatara Sutra says: "Great wisdom should know that holding on to the view of self as Mount Sumeru is better than holding on to the arrogance of seeing existence and non-existence. Holding on to emptiness is not like that." So it is said. Therefore, this Dharma should be taught by the teacher after examining the student's capacity. Whether or not there is capacity can be determined by external signs when that Dharma is taught. Even in the state of an ordinary being, after hearing the Dharma of emptiness from others,
