So, would the aforementioned faults change? Therefore, if both Good Virtue and Chandrakirti have faults, then Chandrakirti should not refute Good Virtue. In this way, all these faults become unreasonable, is that so? The answer is: For those who claim that the self-inference of the continuum is established by a common valid cognition, there will be the fault of the basis and sign not being established by a common valid cognition. We, the Prasangikas, do not use inferences established only by our own system's valid cognition, and we do not even dream of using self-inferences of the continuum established by valid cognition common to other systems. The inferences we state are merely to refute the commitments of others, and their result is to eliminate false accusations in the minds of others, which is a refuting Prasanga. For the Madhyamikas themselves, because of expressing such words (124b), they are free from all elaborations of wanting to express anything knowable and knowing. So, how should one state the refuting Prasanga inference? For example, some Shravaka schools believe that the eye can see other things. They also believe that the eye does not see its own nature. At that time, the debater admits the property of the subject. If the dharma of seeing other things, such as blue, does not see itself, then seeing other things will not occur, and this is also admitted by the example of a pot. At that time, the pervasion is admitted. Having stated the three modes of admission in this way, the Prasanga inference made to refute one's own commitment is: Because of that reason, whatever does not see its own nature, that does not see other things either, for example, a pot. The eye also does not see its own nature, therefore, it does not see other things either. Therefore, seeing other things, such as blue, which is contrary to not seeing one's own nature, contradicts the inference that is famous in himself for the property of the subject and the pervasion, and the false discriminations of the Vaibhashikas are eliminated by the established inference. Therefore, because of what dissimilar faults is it necessary to state only these inferences to refute the views of others? We say

Where is the opportunity for the fault of the basis and reason, which are said to be equally flawed for any party, and which are not established by valid cognition in our Prasangika school? Furthermore, is there harm from inference through the means of inference established for either the proponent or the opponent? (125a) Yes, there is. That is, the harm is caused by the reason itself, which is established by the proponent's own admission. It is not caused by being established for another proponent, because that is how it is seen in the world. For example, in the world, when gambling, sometimes the witness is measured by both the proponent and the opponent, and if it does not contradict the words of the witness, one will be defeated. Sometimes, one is defeated simply by saying that one's own words are not true. If one says that there is no contradiction and it is true, but another says that your meaning does not correspond to that, or conversely, that it contradicts, then the former speaker will not be victorious or defeated because of that. If it is so in the world, is it not so in the case of reason? It is the same in reasoning as it is in the world. Because only worldly terms are called reasonable and unreasonable, and speaking in accordance with this is applied in the case of treatises on reason. Otherwise, in the face of transcendence of the world, free from the proliferation of terms, where can the validity and invalidity of reason and unreason be established? The Prasangikas refute the views of others with reasons that are accepted by others, or establish views that they do not accept, which is the view of the great teacher Buddhapālita, to which the teacher Vasubandhu was not pleased, for that very reason. As the teacher Vasubandhu said: Some think that harm from inference does not occur by virtue of what is known to others (125b), because they want to refute what is known to others. So it is said. In accordance with this, Dignāga said: That which is definitely stated to both is either proof or refutation. To say that it is established or doubtful for either one is not. That is, victory or defeat occurs through arguing with both the subject-property and pervasion being admitted, the proponent
