Although this seems to be a way of refuting, for stating the consequence of refuting Āryadeva and others, since it is not related to the intention of stating its opposite meaning, even if refuted, it cannot be refuted. Just like throwing a weapon outwards from the sky, after cutting off the vital point (103b) that sustains a person's life, even if that person in turn uses a weapon to cut the sky, he cannot cut the sky. Legden refuted without understanding the intention of the venerable Buddhapālita at all. He thought that that teacher had directed the argument "it should not arise from itself, because it would be meaningless and excessive" towards the Sāṃkhya school. However, Āryadeva, like the reason stated there, put forward the stated reason as an undesired consequence, and then put forward other reasons as reasons, thus refuting the Sāṃkhya school. So, in general, refuting a refutation's commitment provokes a svatantra reason, and refuting a refutation's reason provokes a svatantra commitment, which is the way of speculation. So, what is it that the teacher Legden here refutes the consequence's reason, thereby provoking a svatantra reason, and refutes the consequence's commitment, thereby provoking a svatantra commitment? Although this is true, it is said that this kind of refutation is the way of arguing in the style of early speculators. Some later Tibetans say that it is very unreasonable for someone like the teacher Legden to refute without understanding the thought of Saṅgharakṣita. Because for such a great scholar, the sun of refutation cannot rise before the dawn of the prior position. It is said that some impartial bodhisattvas have said that he refuted without understanding his thought, which is well known in early documents. If the tradition of teaching and practice of this Dharma in that early (104a) era, which was uninterrupted between incarnate translators, appears in the scriptures, then it is incorrect, then in this later era, all the traditions of teaching and practice have been interrupted, and relying on the scriptures that each can see, by the power of wisdom, the teacher Legden understood the thought of the teacher Saṅgharakṣita and refuted it, I understand it that way.

What prompted the heart of that debater? Thirdly, regarding the way in which not stating the Svātantrika established by valid cognition of one's own system does not have the fault of not stating examples and reasons; since not stating the consequence of refuting the Svātantrika, there is no contradiction of commitment; since not stating the reason, etc., of one's own system established by valid cognition, there is no need to eliminate the faults in the proposition and reason stated to the opponent; although there is no own tenet, it is shown that there are reasons, examples, etc., for the sake of refuting others; it is shown that the opposite of the consequence is related to other Sāṃkhyas, etc.; Nāgārjuna also showed that when refuting others, he mostly uses the method of consequence to refute them. The first point is: We, Candrakīrti, see that all these faults stated by Legdan Che are unreasonable. How are they unreasonable? Because we, on our side, have not stated reasons and examples, etc., for the time being. What is said is unreasonable. Why? Because even if one does not state one's own system established by valid cognition, it is not a place of refutation, because in the two truths, one is liberated from all elaborations of valid cognition, etc. (104b). Moreover, it is not that one does not state what is accepted by others, because it will be explained below. Here, since one asks questions about the established self-origination asserted by the Sāṃkhyas by means of internal contradiction of commitment, one can also refute their wrong conceptions. Because the meaning of the Sāṃkhyas' assertion that "it arises from the self" is: the existent whose result and nature are the same is the cause itself, and it is that which arises. Saying "it arises from the self, because it arises from what exists in itself" is a contradictory pervasion, because if existence itself is arising, then there is no need for arising. If it arises in that way, one will also see that arising is endless. Because of saying this, one cannot accept that consequence, because you Sāṃkhyas do not want what has already arisen to arise again, and you do not want it to be endless. Therefore, the debate of you Sāṃkhyas about the existence of self-origination is devoid of the reason for establishment. If existence arises, then arising is unnecessary and endless. If one says that what is unreasonable is reasonable, then one contradicts one's own commitment. Thus refuting the opponent from the self.
