It should be thought of as being the same as the basis other than that characteristic. Furthermore, it is not established that whatever the nature of things is only existent because it has characteristics, and that things that do not exist, such as the son of a barren woman, do not have characteristics either. Because things have characteristics. It is said that one does not want existence itself to exist. Moreover, if the Svatantrika school admits that it is established by its own characteristics, then the Svatantrika school will have internal contradictions, so it does not admit it that way. There it says: Therefore, it is not established as a reason. It has also become contradictory in meaning. This is because it has been shown before that things are without inherent existence (100a). The meaning of the opponent's reason, because it has characteristics, etc., is not established for the Madhyamika school. Because all dharmas are without inherent existence. That reason will also become contradictory in meaning, because it is not seen as having characteristics when establishing things that are without inherent existence, such as earth. It is said. Therefore, if things are established by their own characteristics, then the Svatantrika school must admit that the earth's own characteristic, the place of hardness, and its own way of being are established. Because that also seems to be prevented. There it says: The earth is not by the earth's own characteristic. It is not appropriate to represent hardness. Because it is the cause of the consciousness of the body. Just as it is not appropriate by the nature of fire itself. This is to prevent oneness, the nature of the earth is not represented by the hardness of the earth itself, because it is the cause of the arising of the consciousness of the body. For example, just as the nature of fire itself cannot represent the nature of fire itself. It is also said that although it is thought that the characteristic and the basis are different, it is not established there. There it says: The characteristic of a cow is not by the cow itself. One does not admit dewlap and tail, etc. Because it is conceptually constructed with distinctions. For example, like the nature of a donkey. After preventing this, in the summary of preventing the existence of what is obtained by valid cognition without being confused about the self-characteristic of things, it says: If it is one, how is it a characteristic? Because that does not represent that itself. If it is other, how is it a characteristic? Because the other cannot represent the other itself. It is said. In accordance with this, it is also said in the Lamp of Wisdom (100b): The nature of things is, conditions, etc.

“Place is non-existent,” and so on. “Of things” refers to the eyes and so on. “Nature” refers to one's own essence. “Conditions, etc.” refers to semen and blood, etc. The word “etc.” includes collections, powers, and other things. “Non-existent” means negation. Since it does not exist, whose conditions would those conditions become? Thus, for the conventional object of the eye, its nature, that is, its own essence or its own characteristic, and its own entity cannot be established, and it cannot be established by the power of other conditions, etc. Such a clear and easy-to-understand, easy-to-grasp excellent explanation is abandoned, and no matter how one seeks according to the Svatantrika system, one cannot find the view that things exist conventionally as established by their own characteristics from the way they abide in their place. What fruit can one hope for by exerting so much effort? In particular, the great Svatantrika teacher Shantarakshita, when examining reality itself, negated that merely functional entities are pervasive. He held that by negating what is pervasive, the self-characterized and generally characterized entities are also implicitly negated. As stated in the Ornament Root Commentary: “As it is said, ‘All these are merely spoken by me presumptuously. When those with understanding analyze that which is devoid of all capacity for all functions, there is no meaning, because the capacity for function is not an object of analysis. Otherwise, if it is not functional, what is the use of analyzing function? Like the beauty or ugliness of a eunuch, what is the benefit of analyzing it by those with desire? Therefore, the wise say that functionality is the characteristic of a thing. Such an aspect of a thing shows the selflessness of persons and phenomena, etc., and refutes what is fabricated contrary to it, because the meaning of a man, the arising of a result, depends on this. Other than that, there is neither establishment nor negation, because it remains in a state of equanimity. Thus, do not think that the realm of all things is not shown to be selfless, etc. The word 'all' intends to express that.
